Some people will never truly understand how attached we become to the children in our care or just how deeply we love them.

These aren’t just children who come through our doors every morning. They become part of our hearts, our routines, and our lives.

We celebrate their milestones, wipe their tears, kiss their boo-boos, hold them when they’re tired, and love them through their hardest moments. We know their personalities, their little quirks, what makes them laugh, and what helps them feel safe.

We spend our days teaching them, but the truth is, they teach us just as much.

And sometimes, the most important part of our day isn’t the lesson we planned or the activity we prepared. It’s the little one who just needs to be held, the child who wants us to sit beside them, or the group of preschoolers gathered around for a story.

We don’t just watch children grow. We grow to love them.

At EEPS, these children aren’t just names on a roster or families we provide a service for. They are little people who leave permanent footprints on our hearts.

And long after they outgrow our classrooms, we will remember their hugs, their laughter, their little voices, and the privilege of being part of their childhood.

It’s so much more than child care. It’s love. And I wouldn’t trade that part of what we do for anything.

Preschool is hard work! 😂

Some days we climb, dig, make music, read stories, explore with our friends and play until we just can’t play anymore.

And sometimes that means taking a little break right where you are… whether that’s face-down on the playground or asleep in your lunch! 😂

At EEPS, you’ll often notice that our sensory play isn’t perfectly staged, color coordinated, or designed for a beautiful photo.

That’s intentional.

I tend to choose organic sensory experiences over elaborate, adult created sensory setups because I want the experience to belong to the children.

Sensory play doesn’t have to be pretty to be meaningful.

It can be digging in real dirt, squishing mud between little fingers, pouring water from one container to another, scooping sand, collecting rocks and sticks, mixing leaves into a “soup,” exploring snow, feeling grass under bare feet, or discovering what happens when water meets dirt.

When we provide children with simple, open ended materials, there isn’t a “right” way to play. They get to decide what happens next.

And that’s where so much learning occurs.

They’re experimenting with cause and effect. They’re comparing textures, weights, temperatures and quantities. They’re strengthening fine motor skills. They’re problem solving, creating, communicating and regulating their bodies, all while doing something that simply feels like play.

Beautifully staged sensory bins can absolutely be fun, and we use planned sensory experiences too. But I never want the appearance of an activity to become more important than what children are actually getting from it.

Sometimes the very best sensory invitation is simply water, dirt, sticks, rocks, leaves and permission to explore.

It might not always make the prettiest picture.

But childhood isn’t supposed to be staged.

It’s supposed to be experienced.

“They’re just playing.”

We hear those words so often in early childhood.

But there is no such thing as “just” playing.

When a child builds a tower and watches it fall, they are learning cause and effect, balance, problem-solving and perseverance.

When children play house, restaurant, doctor or school, they are practicing language, relationships, empathy and the world they see around them.

When they dig in the dirt, pour water, mix colors, collect rocks or chase bugs, they are becoming scientists.

When they negotiate who gets the red truck, decide the rules of a game, comfort a crying friend or figure out how to join a group, they are developing social and emotional skills they will use for the rest of their lives.

Jean Piaget’s work emphasized that children construct knowledge through interacting with and exploring their world. Play gives them the opportunity to do exactly that.

Lev Vygotsky beautifully described what happens during play:

“In play a child always behaves beyond his average age, above his daily behavior.”

And Fred Rogers reminded us:

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.”

At EEPS, we don’t see a child stacking blocks and think, “They’re just playing.”

We see engineering.

We don’t see a child making mud pies and think, “They’re just getting dirty.”

We see sensory exploration, creativity, science and imagination.

We don’t see children running around outside and think, “They’re just burning energy.”

We see growing bodies developing strength, coordination, confidence and an understanding of what those bodies can do.

And when you see a room full of children laughing, pretending, building, creating, digging, climbing, talking and exploring?

You are looking at learning in its most natural form.

Childhood doesn’t need to look like elementary school to prepare children for elementary school.

Sometimes the most important learning happens when it looks like they’re “just playing.”

At EEPS, play is learning.

Today, I feel especially compelled to say something that has always been at the heart of EEPS:

Every child is precious. Every child deserves to feel safe. Every child deserves to know that they belong.

At EEPS, our doors and our hearts are open to families from every background, every culture, every language, and every walk of life.

The children who come through our doors are not defined by where they were born, what language their family speaks, what they look like, or where their story began.

They are children.

They deserve to play, learn, laugh, make friends, be silly, feel safe, and be surrounded by adults who care for them fiercely.

And their families deserve kindness, dignity, and compassion too.

Whatever may be happening outside our little corner of the world, I want our EEPS families to know this:

You are welcome here.
Your children are loved here.
Your family matters here.
And there will always be a place for you at our table.

That is who we are at EEPS.
And that will never change.

All people are worthy of love. And children, especially, should never have to wonder if they are welcome. They are. Always.

I’m away from EEPS this afternoon- but I just received this great message and pic from one of the preschool teachers- safe to say- the kids and the balloon are in safe hands.

“We rescued a balloon from side of the road and named him flat biscuit he is now a member of the EEPS family“

A month ago… I was stressed because I had a few teachers leaving to pursue their dreams… But God is always providing- and the teachers He provided are nothing short of amazing.

Who says “school” has to happen inside?

As always (or as much as possible)we packed up our learning and headed outdoors… because some of the very best learning happens under the open sky.

Our little learners practiced fine motor skills by carefully peeling stickers and placing them on our giant letter S while we focused on recognizing the letter and practicing its isolated sound… /sss/.

Math looked a little different today, too! Using our school bus and students, our younger friends practiced rote counting and one-to-one correspondence, while our older learners challenged themselves with simple addition and subtraction.

Learning outside brings movement, fresh air, and so many opportunities for hands-on exploration. It’s amazing how much children learn when they’re engaged, having fun, and don’t even realize they’re “doing school.”

At EEPS, we believe childhood should be full of curiosity, exploration, and joyful learning… wherever that learning takes place.

Sometimes exploring something new looks like cautiously dipping your toes in… studying it… thinking about it… and deciding if you’re brave enough for one more splash.

Mud play is so much more than getting dirty. It’s discovering new textures, building confidence, solving little problems, and learning that it’s okay to be unsure before jumping in.

At EEPS, we celebrate those moments just as much as the muddy giggles. Every child explores at their own pace, and some of the biggest discoveries happen after a little hesitation.

Today, this little explorer reminded us that courage doesn’t always look loud… sometimes it looks like quietly sitting in the mud, taking it all in, and deciding you’re ready for just one more adventure.
