Here are some more cool finds that were seen around the center and some fun facts about each!

First, we have a walnut sphinx moth which is famous for its caterpillar's unique defense mechanism of making loud, high-pitched squeaking or whistling sounds when disturbed!🦋

Next, we have a red velvet ant which is not actually an ant at all, but actually a species of wingless female wasp with a notoriously painful sting.🐜

The last photo is a stinging rose caterpillar that was found in our garden! It belongs to the slug moth family and moves like a slug instead of crawling like a typical caterpillar. 🐛

Last week we had the pleasure of seeing groups from Paine Elementary! They took our herpetology🐍🐢, friends of a feather🪶🦉, and our lake living🦞 class! They found some awesome finds all of the lake living classes👀

For you our poem goes like this:

Paine Elementary with eyes so bright,
They got to learn how birds take flight.
Beneath the ripples in the shallow pool,
They found many a crawfish, oh how cool!

Hello! My name is Hayleigh, and I have been part of 4-H for many seasons. Growing up, I loved to be outside and learning about animals. As I got older, I used to feel like my knowledge tended to fall under the “useless facts” category and that I didn’t really need to expand anymore on it. To me, no one really seemed as interested as I was in frogs, worms, and snakes, so I felt like I could only really talk about it with my family. Eventually though, it took one person (besides my mom lol love you) getting just as hyped as me about nature to get me back into it! It meant more to me than that person will probably ever know. As an Environmental Educator at the Alabama 4-H Science School, I get to talk to kids that are just like I was every day! You wanna talk to me about your favorite facts? DO IT! I get to encourage kids to learn about their passions every day, and it is my favorite thing. My experience with 4-H has given me so much confidence as a person and educator and made me believe that it is possible to take my career with Environmental Science to the next level! I think if you have the opportunity to work here then you definitely should. I have gotten to teach hundreds of children, learn more about nature, and make some lifelong friends during my time here. Here are some cool finds that were seen around the center and some fun facts about each!

First, we have a buck moth caterpillar which is a venomous insect covered in stinging spikes. Look but don’t touch!🐛

Next we have a regal moth! Adult regal moths have no mouth parts and don’t eat during their short one week life span.🦋

The last picture is some type of predatory stick bug! They are beneficial garden helpers that can feed on more than 100 species of insects🪲

Last week we had Prince of Peace, who are our fishing champions! They have set a new record for most fish caught in our fishy class!🎣

Prince of peace brought pure delight,
Caught so many fish, with scales so bright.
With loud cheers and giant swings,

Our animal of the month is Perry, our resident common snapping turtle!

Fun fact about common snapping turtles, they are ambush hunters who spend most of their time on the bottom of lakes and streams, burying themselves in mud and wait for prey! They eat almost anything, including fish, frogs, plants, small birds, insects, and dead animal matter 🐢🌞

Happy Vulture Awareness Day!

They may not win any beauty contests, but vultures play a very important role in our ecosystems! By feeding on carrion, they help remove decaying animals from the environment and can reduce the spread of harmful bacteria and disease. 🌎🖤

What makes Alabama so special is the incredible wildlife we get to learn about and share with others! Teaching about our native reptiles, amphibians, and raptors is always a mission we’re proud to spread.
