What makes NACA valuable right now?

In “Perspective from the Field: The Case for NACA,” longtime NACA volunteer and former Board member Ken Abrahams offers his perspective on why the Association matters in today's higher education environment.

Ken reflects on how the field has changed, the growing demands placed on campus activities professionals, and what makes NACA different. At the center of his argument is NACA's unique ability to bring students, professionals, and industry partners together around learning, connection, and growth.

Ken Abrahams of Fun Enterprises, Inc. attended his first NACA conference in 1979 as a sophomore at Connecticut College. Since then, he has attended more than 300 conferences, written for Campus Activities Programming, and served the Association in numerous volunteer roles, including the NACA Board of Directors.

His challenge to all of us is worth considering: Don't just join NACA. Engage with it.

You're already a project manager. You just may not call yourself one. Events. Budgets. Stakeholders. Timelines. Assessment. Risk management.

In “Project Management in Higher Education: It’s What We Do (And Why We Should Start Doing It Intentionally),” Adonica Reed explores how project management principles can bring greater structure, clarity, accountability, and sustainability to the work of student affairs. She introduces practical tools such as project charters, RACI charts, and close-out reports that can strengthen programs while reducing confusion and duplication.

Adonica Reed serves as Associate Director for Campus Activities at Southeastern Louisiana University. With more than eight years of higher education and student affairs experience, she has worked across fraternity and sorority life, student government, student organizations, leadership development, and multicultural engagement.

Student affairs professionals are already project managers. It’s time to own it.

More programming does not automatically mean more engagement.

In “When Engagement Turns into Exhaustion,” NACA Leadership Fellow Ti-Ana Pyatt takes a thoughtful look at the hidden costs of constantly filling the campus calendar.

When programming becomes a race for visibility, attendance, and the “perfect” event, student leaders can experience fatigue, burnout, and a loss of the creativity that makes campus programming meaningful in the first place.

Ti-Ana's recommendations include conducting programming audits, evaluating engagement beyond attendance numbers, creating intentional space for rest, reducing event duplication, and emphasizing quality over quantity.

Ti-Ana Pyatt is Assistant Director for Student Engagement at Clemson University, where she advises TigerLive Entertainment and Central Spirit. She also leads training for faculty and staff advisors of student organizations.

The question isn't simply how often students are engaged. It is how meaningfully.
