Gabii Project

This awareness of the linkages between Gabii and Rome is but one motivation for further archaeological investigation of this urban center.

An international team of archaeologists excavating the ancient site of Gabii, aiming to better contextualize our understanding of this important ancient city and explore its relationships not just with Rome, but also with the archaeology of Central Italy. The Gabii Project was launched in 2007 with the objective of studying and excavating the ancient Latin city of Gabii, a city-state that was both

a neighbor of, and a rival to, Rome in the first millennium BC. Located in the region of Italy once known as Latium, the site of Gabii was occupied since at least the tenth century BC until its decline in the second and third centuries AD. Amazingly, in subsequent centuries the site of Gabii was never developed or even substantially occupied, nor has the urban area ever been the site of major, stratigraphic excavations. As such, the site provides a unique opportunity to study the development and structure of Archaic urban planning in Central Italy, both monumental and civic architecture, domestic space, and all other corollary studies. Since Gabii eventually became a part of the Roman Empire – first as a member of the Latin League and later as a town with municipal status - numerous important intersections exist between Gabii and Rome. The Gabii Project seeks not only to explore and understand the archaeology of the city of Gabii but also to situate and contextualize our understanding of Gabii in the wider orbits of Central Italy and the Roman Empire. It is also important to achieve a better understanding of the urban development of Gabii herself and the relationship that existed among the cities of Latium in antiquity.

Exciting News Gabines! Our Field Director Anna Gallone and Topography Director Tyler Johnson will be presenting at the Italian Association for the Study and Conservation of Mosaics (AISCOM) tomorrow! Their presentation will include new data and research regarding the use of Gabine stones in floor revetments. If you are at the AISCOM Colloquium, make sure to check it out!

Today, Caitlyn Pallas will be presenting “Radioactive Mortar: The Application of Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) on Bulk Samples of Mortar from Roman Urban Sites” from 5:30–7:30 p.m. in the Lightning Session (Continental 7, Ballroom Level).

On Saturday, January 10th, there are three talks:

G. Martinez will present “Broadening Least-Cost Paths: Iterating the Roads East of Rome” from 8:25–8:45 a.m. in session 7B: Quantitative Methods in Archaeology (Golden Gate 8, Lobby Level).

Dr. Marcello Mogetta will then present “A New Monumental Complex at Gabii Revealed: Results of the 2025 season of Gabii Project” from 11:30—11:50 a.m. in session 8I: Roman Waterworks: New Data from the Field (Golden Gate 8, Lobby Level).

Following shortly after, Dr. Parrish Wright, Dr. Marilyn Evans, and Dr. Laura Banducci will be presenting “Republican Feasts and Dumps: Examining Structured Deposits in Gabii’s Cuniculi” from 11:55–12:15 p.m. in session 8H: Making the Most of Legacy Data (Golden Gate 7, Lobby Level).

Hello Everyone! The Rome Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, the Gabii Project, and John Cabot University are proud to invite you to the upcoming lecture of Tuesday, December 2, 2025. at 6:30 PM.

This talk will focus on the evidence uncovered in the so-called A-B areas, documenting the birth of enucleated settlements in pre-urban centers, the establishment of a quasi-orthogonal urban grid in the late 5th century BCE, the construction of private houses in the mid-Republican times, and the repurposing of the block with a small burial ground and the installation of a quarry of the local bedrock during the Empire. The dynamics that led to this last transformation, the co-existence of industrial activities and tombs traditionally relegated to outside the perimeter of cities, give us the opportunity to explore perceptions of “urban” and “not urban” spaces.

Anna Gallone is a Roman archaeologist and lecturer at John Cabot University whose research focuses on urban development in Tyrrhenian Italy and the Romanization of central and southern Italy. She has served as the field director of the Gabii Project since 2007, and was awarded the AIA prize for digital archaeology in 2024 for her editorial work on A Cemetery and Quarry from Imperial Gabii.

This lecture has been selected as the 2025–2026 Ernest R. Graham Lecture in Ancient Architecture by the Archaeological Institute of America.

The talk will last 40 minutes, followed by a Q&A session.

The event is open to all AIA members, the general public, and the JCU community, but registration is required to access the New Campus in John Cabot University.

We are very excited to announce that the University of Missouri (Mizzou) has received a Collaborative Research Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in support of our digital publishing program through the proposal titled "Recreating Urban Biographies in Roman Italy: The Gabii Project Reports”! Three new interactive online publications developed in partnership with University of Michigan Press (www.fulcrum.org/gabii) will present stratigraphic and spatial data excavated from Areas, C, D, F, and I of the site, linking narrative, archive, and visualization of an archaeological sequence spanning over 1,500 years of occupation at Gabii. If you are interested in learning more about the research the Gabii Project supports, please check out our website gabiiproject.org. You should also check out our sister site and the museum at Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Palestrina MANP.
