Virginia’s inspiration for OLA is deeply personal. Her oldest son, Mason, was born at 27 weeks and later diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Despite his intelligence and remarkable attention to detail, traditional schools could not meet his learning and even physical needs. Years later, her youngest son, Walker, was diagnosed with autism. Through these experiences, Virginia felt called to transform her challenges into purpose, creating a school not only for her own children, but for others in the special needs community. From that calling, Opa’s Learning Academy was born.

A few fun facts about Virginia:
* Her father, George Hendry, owned a chicken wing restaurant and so she was perfectly suited to marry a man who “could happily survive on a steady diet of chicken wings”
* Virginia’s house is almost always spotlessly clean. This is an especially incredible feat given the fact that she has three boys all under the age of 14 (and Scott should really count as a fourth), five dogs and three cats
* Virginia has a keen eye for design and it’s nothing to walk into their home and find that she has re-arranged and/or re-designed in a short amount of time. She’s handy with a hammer and drill and isn’t afraid of a little sawdust
* Virginia is a terrific cook, especially when it comes to side dishes. If you are lucky enough to be at a potluck with her, ask about her baked beans or creamed corn

While Virginia is the fearless leader of OLA, she is most comfortable in the background, making sure that everything gets done. Because for Virginia, this is about the most special children of our community.
We are all so grateful of Virginia’s can-do attitude, her fierce loyalty, and her drive to solve problems💛

Day by day, OLA is starting to take shape—and more importantly, it’s starting to feel like home. 🏡

Our inaugural students are settling in, finding their routines, and making this space their own. Watching them become more comfortable each day reminds us exactly why we started this journey💙

I couldn’t resist showcasing the beautiful mural by Caroline again! Caroline captured the heart of OLA so beautifully, and it looked especially beautiful with the evening light. 💫

And maybe the most rewarding part is seeing our slogan come to life. Believe. Belong. Become. What once felt like words we hoped would define OLA is starting to feel like something that’s actually happening

We were so honored when Caroline agreed to design and paint this beautiful mural for our lobby. Caroline captured the essence of our school so perfectly—a space that is calm, welcoming, and engaging for our children.

We couldn’t have dreamed of anything more beautiful than the way it turned out. Every detail feels intentional and reflects what we hope OLA will always be: a place where children are accepted, celebrated, and given the space to simply be themselves.

Carl Rogers once wrote about appreciating people the same way we appreciate a sunset—not trying to change it or control it, but watching it unfold with awe. That idea feels especially meaningful to us at OLA. This quote holds a very special meaning for our lead instructor, Ashley, and Caroline was able to beautifully incorporate its message into the mural.

Every child has their own way of unfolding, and there is something incredibly beautiful about giving them the space to do just that. 💛

Thank you, Caroline, for creating something so special for our children and for capturing the heart of OLA in a way we could have never imagined. ✨

Get to know our Co-Founder | Scott Wells

Scott’s inspiration for OLA grew from seeing firsthand the need for more opportunities and support for children with exceptional needs. After navigating the struggles of traditional schooling with his oldest son, Scott understood the need for something different. OLA began as a little dream of his wife’s—but Scott believed in that dream enough to help turn it into a reality.

A Few Fun Facts About Scott:

🏈 Devoted Gamecock fan—loyal through the wins, the losses, and the “there’s always next season” moments.

🍗 Could happily survive on a steady diet of chicken wings.

🚁 He can be in the middle of anything and will immediately stop to watch a helicopter fly over the house. Priorities. 😂

🥃 Bourbon connoisseur—and always happy to share his opinions on a good pour.

🐱 He’s always had a soft spot for cats, but lately his wife would say he’s become slightly obsessed with the newest addition to the family—a rescue beagle named Colonel, affectionately named after one of his favorite bourbons.

🏡 Scott and his wife have made countless updates to their home in downtown Rosewood, and along the way, Scott has learned that when she says, “What would be involved?” she’s usually not looking for an answer—she’s looking for a co-pilot😂

💙 And most importantly, he’s a devoted husband and father—his boys and his family will always be his greatest priority.

OLA began as a little dream of his wife’s, but Scott believed enough in his boys, his wife, and his community to help turn that dream into a reality. 🧡💙💚

We’re so thankful that Scott believed in the dream enough to help make OLA a reality✨

🎉 TODAY WAS OUR FIRST OFFICIAL DAY🎉

Our students transitioned so beautifully, and it proved to me that we made the right decision in opening OLA.💙

Through all the tears, stress, and uncertainty, there has always been a seed of hope, a reason to push through, and it’s our students and all our future students as OLA continues to grow and expand.

A huge thank you again to our OLA BELIEVERS! You believed in our vision, and helped us make this day possible.🧡

And to our amazing inaugural families- thank you for trusting us with your children. We are honored to walk alongside you and be a part of their journey.

(There are a few missing faces that will make their way in over the next several weeks😀)
