May is Military Appreciation Month, and students at Van Horn High School are building wooden American flags and personally delivering them to veterans at the Veterans Community Project of Kansas City. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Students in Jim Oatman’s advanced woodworking classes craft the flags as part of Project HOME, a community service initiative that gives students the chance to honor veterans while learning leadership, compassion, and the importance of giving back.

β€œThere are a lot of people out there that are doing a lot of good, and there are a lot of people that need a lot of help,” Oatman said. β€œI think it’s just kind of eye-opening for kids to see that, β€˜Hey, I can do something to help to make the world better.’”

Students not only present the flags to veterans, but also spend time hearing their stories and building meaningful connections across generations.

In the latest edition of School & Community, learn how Oatman's vision for Project HOME continues to grow, creating unique opportunities for his students while honoring veterans across the country.

Tuesday Testimonial πŸ’¬

"This is my 26th year as a public school teacher, and I have never needed to use the MSTA's services, but last year, I was not supported by my administration, and an MSTA representative came and represented my needs. She had my back, and I was incredibly grateful."

Join MSTA in advocating for a teacher on the State Board of Education. πŸ“£

Missouri law requires an active classroom teacher to serve as a non-voting member of the State Board of Education, but that seat has remained empty since the law was passed more than seven years ago.

With the upcoming retirement of Commissioner of Education Dr. Karla Eslinger, it is imperative that a teacher be appointed to the State Board, so current educators have a seat at the table as a new commissioner is considered.

MSTA members can use Tillie, MSTA’s AI-powered advocacy assistant, to help draft an email to Gov. Mike Kehoe asking for a teacher appointment to the State Board of Education.
