Center for Profitable Agriculture A department in UT Extension dedicated to helping farmers grow and develop value-added enterprises

As a department in UT Extension, the Center for Profitable Agriculture provides educational programming and technical assistance to Tennessee Farmers interested in a value-added enterprise to improve farm income. Evaluating the costs of starting a new enterprise, navigating regulatory issues and identifying a potential market are some of the many challenges farmers may face when considering a value-added enterprise. Specialists at the Center may be able to help in the evaluation and development process through
◾Individual enterprise analysis
◾Educational workshops and conferences
◾Educational publications and planning tools

The Center is a partnership between UT Extension and the Tennessee Farm Bureau.

Megan Leffew, Bruce Steelman (UT Extension Lincoln County) and Charles Denney (University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture) spent some time this afternoon with Will Scott at Scotts Orchard learning about their 125 year history of growing and marketing apples. 🍎 Stay tuned for a special 🎥 project sharing more about this farm and its work with UT.

We spent some time visiting some incredible farms this week. On Wednesday, Megan Leffew met Agricultural & Resource Economics at The University of Tennessee’s Dr. Kim Morgan and two interns from the Zamorano University in Honduras at Breeden's Orchard. We learned about their new c***ry making value-added products, on-farm retail and agritourism activities. The c***r and c***r slush gave us great relief in the heat.

On Thursday, the Center’s Leffew and Troy Dugger led a day-long tour for 36 participants to: Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese, Chaney's Dairy Barn and Jackson’s Orchard as part of the Southeast Dairy Business Innovation Initiative - SDBII. Hearing from these experienced entrepreneurs and seeing their operations first hand created rich learning opportunities. We sampled delicious cheese, milk, ice cream, and assorted apple treats. Time on bus between stops allowed for further discussion and networking about value-added products, on-farm retail, and agritourism opportunities and challenges.

We had the opportunity to hear from representatives of the KY Center for Ag & Rural Development, Tennessee Department of Agriculture, USDA Rural Development, University of Kentucky Center for Crop Diversification, and UT Extension.

Experiences like this could not be possible without the gracious hospitality and willingness of these producers to share what they have learned over many years. We greatly appreciate their hospitality.
