Presented by Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, the Howard County Office of Human Rights & Equity, the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center, and the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, this vibrant celebration honors the richness of Black culture, the power of community connection, the importance of telling our stories in our own voices, and the history and ongoing significance of Juneteenth. Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the day when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom on June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is considered the longest-running African American holiday and officially became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.
