Tennessee College of Applied Technology Hohenwald celebrated Fall trimester enrollment with Student Appreciation Day on Friday, September 12, 2014. The college provided a luncheon of grilled hotdogs, chips, cookies and a drink for all the students to enjoy. The office staff hosted the event, with Director Kelli Kea-Carroll and Student Services Coordinator, Andrea Cooper grilling hotdogs for the student body. Chips, cookies and drinks were served by Pam Hinson, Lisa Couch and Paige Bates. About 600 hotdogs were grilled with students enjoying their share!
The day was also “Show Your Colors Day” with everyone encouraged to wear their favorite sports team or school colors. Tennessee Titan blue was the prevalent color of the day with the Lewis County Panther colors also being prominently displayed. The college held the event to show their appreciation for the students and to thank the students for choosing the Tennessee College of Applied Technology as their choice of school. A great time was had by all, with the event concluding with the “Happy” song.

Twenty-six students from Tennessee College of Applied Technology Hohenwald (TCAT-H) went to Chattanooga, TN for the Annual SkillsUSA State Conference on April 14-16, 2014. As a result of all their hard work and training, we achieved nine gold, five silver, and four bronze medals in our nineteen competition areas. The 2014 competition results are as follows: Architectural Drafting Gold Alan Vineyard; Practical Nursing Gold Lauren McKennon; Mobile Robotics Technology Gold Kyle Riddle & Robert Layson; Mechatronics Gold Colton Langford & Jeffrey Pilkinton; High School Customer Service Gold Sara Denman; High School Mobile Robotics Technology Gold Geoff & Ray Whitehead; Cosmetology Silver Bo Barnes; Esthetics Silver Nikki Talley & Kambria Creasy; Electrical Construction Wiring Silver Sam Beatty; Medical Terminology Silver Erik Odom; Pin Design Bronze Kyle Adams; Electronics Technology Bronze Jesse Pretzer; Nail Care Bronze Angie Pickard & Hollie Mercer; Medical Math 4th place Mary Hart; Computer Maintenance Technology 4th place Jonathan Crigger; Technical Drafting 5th place Michael Bell. Also finishing in Top Ten were Job Interview Truly Sparks; Welding Nolan Payne; & Automotive Service Technology Joshua Garland. Our gold medalists will go on to represent Tennessee at the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, MO on June 23-27, 2014. This is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2013, there were nearly 6,000 contestants in 98 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management make the national event possible. Mary Crowell also represented Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Hohenwald as our Outstanding Student of Year.

The SkillsUSA student leaders met with Representative Sheila Butt on January 10, 2014. These students are studying advocacy and shared their stories of how important career and technical training has been in their life. Simply stated, when we look at the issues facing this country from a necessity to build a highly skilled work force essential to our economy, to improving educational attainment and preventing dropouts, career and technical education is key. Representative Butt came to visit our campus and find out how we are working hard to meet those needs.
