Nutrition from calving to breeding

Nutrition from calving to breeding

Nutritional management from calving through breeding is critical for timely rebreeding in first‑calf heifers.

During early lactation:
As heifers transition into fall and winter, declining forage quality and increasing nutrient demands can increase the risk of negative energy balance.
Insufficient energy during this period can delay the return to estrus, lengthen the interval from calving to first heat, and reduce overall pregnancy rates.
Monitoring body condition helps determine whether additional energy supplementation is needed to support cycling and rebreeding success.

Nutrition from purchase to calving

Nutrition from purchase to calving

Nutritional management from purchase to first calving plays a critical role in the success of replacement heifers.

During this period, heifers are managed when the majority of fetal growth occurs. Nutritional management should focus on:
-Managing heifers separately from mature cows to reduce competition at the feed bunk
-Providing diets that meet nutrient requirements for growth and pregnancy
-Offering free‑choice trace minerals and vitamin supplementation
-Monitoring body condition to avoid excessive weight gain or loss

Careful nutritional management during this stage helps ensure heifers enter calving season at appropriate weight and body condition, supporting calving success and future reproductive performance.
