The application page is open! Apply by April 5, 2025. www.missouriphotoworkshop.org. (About this photo: Thousands saw photos from the MPW archive when the "Small Towns, Big Stories" exhibit was in the State Historical Society of Missouri last year. This photo from Washington, Missouri, was one of the 121 photos on display. SHSMO assistant director of education Beth Pike has roots in Washington and learned more about this photo taken in 1972 at MPW24 by Phyllis Fernandez Romero, who was then a freelance photographer in New York City. "The Remillard children, Lynn, Tim, Laurie and Linda, wait for a school bus on the corner of Sixth and Wilson as the youngest sibling, Luann, peeks out of a window in the family’s home. The children’s uniforms met the standard dress code at Our Lady of Lourdes. Photographing daily life in a small town encouraged photographers to make meaningful pictures out of ordinary situations. Participation in the workshop often came from word-of-mouth recommendations, and that participation changed the visual culture at many newspapers.") Today, photographers and documentarians come to MPW at all stages of their careers. Daily news photographers are part of the mix which includes freelancers, photo editors, conservation photographers, non-profit photographers, etc. If you care about the process of finding, pitching and photographing an intimate picture story, we're here for you in Missouri.
