University of South Carolina College of Education Research is fundamental to the mission of the college.

The College of Education is a state and national leader in providing comprehensive, world-class preparation for teachers, counselors, education administrators, researchers and policymakers. Our highly credentialed team of college administrators are guiding the efforts of our faculty and staff in helping educators achieve excellence in teaching, and in helping students achieve success in learning. The College of Education is divided into four academic departments: the Departments of Educational Leadership and Policies, Educational Studies, Instruction and Teacher Education and Physical Education. Congratulations to Meir Muller, Ph.D., on his participation in the upcoming National Convening on the Black-Jewish Alliance. Muller teaches a class on the historic alliance between Black and Jewish Americans and has presented on the subject with fellow faculty member, Devin Randolph, Ph.D. across the nation. Last year, they had the opportunity to speak at Harvard University on their work. This fall, Muller has been invited to participate in a conference funded by the Redstone Foundation.

The University of South Carolina College of Education is pleased to announce a total of more than $4 million in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year.

Four projects were funded across disciplines in the College of Education, setting a college record for NSF awards being awarded within a few days of each other.

🔬 Jan Yow, Ph.D., is the PI on a project offering professional development for STEM teacher leaders in rural South Carolina.

🤖 Hengtao Tang, Ph.D., is the PI on a project establishing research a research framework for engineering students’ ethical understandings of AI.

🏕️ Brooke Whitworth, Ph.D., is the Co-PI on a project that is developing highly effective science teachers who can engage students in authentic scientific practices using real-world data and local outdoor environments.

➕ Lucas Vasconcelos, Ph.D., is the PI on a project developing strong foundations for early learners in computational and mathematical thinking by studying pre-service educators’ use of learner-centered scaffolds.
