Are you interested in economics? Do you like to discuss economic topics? Do you want to learn more about economics in an open, informal environment? Then, the Gamecock Economic Society (GES) is for you!!
The Gamecock Economic Society is open any interested full-time University of South Carolina student to discuss economic theory, contemporary economic issues, and other related subjects with like-minded peers, foremost in the form of Socratic discussion but also through peer-to-peer pedagogy, informal presentation, and joint literature review. The Society further serves to facilitate personal and professional connections between members, provide meaningful topic-related events, and bring in expert accounts.
In the past, students have had a personal meeting with a SC Congressman and participated in several economic competitions like the CME Group Trading Challenge:

This club is open to any major in any school at USC. It is discussion based and driven by students, professors, and other guests presenting economic ideas for the club.
This will be an intro meeting for the semester; we will be discussing goals, planning specifics for meetings, and electing officers. Meetings will continue over zoom weekly on Wednesdays at 5pm.

This afternoon, the Economic Society had the pleasure of meeting with Congressman Tom Rice! A successful lunch; the congressman let us pick his brain and explained his goals for the economy to us. Thank you Congressman Rice!
The first meeting of the semester is today! We will meet at 5pm in the dining area Darla Moore. Join us! In today’s meeting, we will explain how economic society is run and what to expect, as well as a few introductory activities. We are also preparing to meet with a congressman late next week. New summer boot camp that builds advanced computing skills
The Becker Friedman Institute is pleased to announce the creation of the Open Source Macroeconomics Laboratory (OSM Lab), which will run an intensive and immersive seven-week computational macroeconomics boot camp from June 19 to August 4, 2017.
The goals are to:
• train advanced undergraduates and graduate students with the computational skills to participate in cutting-edge economic research and public policy analysis;
• inspire the brightest young researchers to pursue policy-relevant work throughout their careers;
• spread the ideals of transparency and replicability throughout the economics profession from the ground up, and
• accelerate scientific progress in economics and policy analysis more broadly.

We invite talented and motivated students to apply. The program is open to advanced undergraduate students and graduate students, with 20 fully funded student slots for available for summer 2017. Funding includes travel to and from the University of Chicago, housing at the University, and a stipend of $4,200 for the seven weeks.
Successful applicants will have taken courses or demonstrate proficiency in core microeconomic theory (constrained optimization with Lagrangian), linear algebra, multivariable calculus, real analysis, and writing code in some programming language.
