The Community Orchard promotes citizen involvement and invites groups to plan educational and social activities at the orchard. Columbia Resilience is currently caring f

or the Orchard and has developed a permaculture design. In July 2015 we received a grant from The Richland County Conservation Commission to plant new trees, expand plantings and create educational signs. In 2020 we received a grant from Columbia Green to expand our pawpaw parch, add muscadine and kiwi vines, plant two peach trees and a crabapple, add serviceberry and chokecherry for the birds, and to make early spring more colorful with daffodils. We appreciate our student partners at USC for building our kiosk, installing a drip irrigation system, designing and building our two wheelchair accessible raised beds and our boardwalk, plus adding a solar panel to the kiosk for charging phones. Folks, it’s time to have the conversation about goldenrod. The goldenrods (Solidago spp) are starting to bloom on the roadside and in fields. With every glimpse of those bright yellow flowers, people with fall allergies are getting nervous. But don’t blame the flowers you see, for goldenrod is not the culprit. Those bright yellow flowers are there to attract insects because their pollen is too heavy to travel on the wind (and into your nose). Your allergies are caused by ragweed and grasses, plants whose non-descript flowers you will likely never see and whose lightweight pollen is carried on the breeze.

This one is anise-scented goldenrod (Solidago odora), named for the aromatic smell of its leaves when lightly crushed. While this one generally resembles the panicles of the aggressive roadside goldenrod (S. altissima), it is a shorter plant and a clumping species which doesn’t spread by roots. It also has smooth edges on the leaves (see arrow).

Many native plants have unfortunately earned nicknames of “weed” and a few deserve them but not ironweed. Ironweed (Vernonia spp.) is a plant that deserves more usage in the garden and more preservation in wild spaces. This tall perennial is fairly unremarkable until deep purple clusters of tiny flowers burst open, usually in mid to late summer (there are some earlier blooming ones). What appears to be a single flower is actually about a dozen blooms, typical for a plant in the Asteraceae family. Bees and butterflies benefit from ironweed’s nectar and pollen and small birds eat the seeds later. It is also a larval host plant for the American painted lady butterfly.
