It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Joan Tronco Saddik, CN ’60.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 24, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Joan Tronco Saddik, 84, of Tampa, Florida, passed away on August 22, 2026, with her husband by her side.

Born June 7, 1942, in Columbia, South Carolina, she attended St. Peter’s School and Catholic High School, where she was a National Honor Society member and the 1960 May Queen. Her essay, “Discrimination and the Catholic Conscience,” earned national acclaim from U.S. Catholic bishops. She went on to study at Ursuline College and the University of South Carolina, later earning her master’s degree from the University of South Florida.

Joan built a distinguished career in Tampa city government, serving under five consecutive mayors, beginning with Mayor Dick Greco. She was named Tampa’s “Woman of the Year” in 2003.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Crystal Tronco, and her brother, Mike Tronco. She is survived by her husband, Marc Saddik; daughter, Dawn Marie Fair; granddaughter, Heather Games; great-granddaughters, Isybella and Brooke Etherton; brother, Joe Tronco of Charlotte, North Carolina; and sister, Angela Tronco of Chapin, South Carolina.

Joan will be remembered for her unwavering love of family, her deep dedication to the city of Tampa, her love of travel, and her warm, fun-loving spirit that brightened everyone’s day.

Cardinal Connections: Back on Campus

Madisen Lionetti, Class of 2025, recently stopped by Cardinal Newman for a visit! Madisen has completed A-School as an Aviation Ordnanceman (AO) in the United States Navy and will soon report to her first command aboard the USS Bougainville in Norfolk, Virginia.

Congratulations, Madisen, on this exciting accomplishment. We are so proud of you and grateful for your service! Go Cards!

Harry Weaver, Class of 2024, stopped by Cardinal Newman today for a visit! Harry is currently a junior at the University of South Carolina, where he is majoring in chemical engineering and minoring in nuclear engineering. We are proud of all he is accomplishing and loved having him back on campus. Go Cards!

We would like to share the funeral arrangements for John T. Rayel “Jack,” Cardinal Newman Class of 1969.

The funeral service will be held at noon on Wednesday, August 19, in the Rose Garden at St. Joseph Catholic Church. We hope Jack’s classmates and fellow alumni who are able will attend as we remember and honor his life.

Please continue to pray for the repose of Jack’s soul and for comfort and peace for his family and friends during this difficult time.
