Throughout the past two weeks, the Gamecock Battalion conducted a squad basics lab and a land navigation lab. During squad basics, Cadets learned the fundamentals of squad patrolling, including weapon system familiarization, different formations and orders of movement, using hand and arm signals to communicate silently, applying camouflage, and buddy team bounding towards contact. At land navigation, our MS1s and MS2s learned basics of land navigation, including how to read a map, plot points on a map, use a compass, and determine pace count. The MS3s traveled to the St. Lo land navigation course on Fort Jackson and tested their ability to apply these fundamentals in a practical land navigation exercise. The fundamentals they have begun to build will be revisited and improved until they become second nature, so our Cadets are able to utilize them effortlessly when conducting missions or being tested at Cadet Summer Training.

This morning, the Gamecock Battalion joined forces with the Air Force, Navy, and Marine ROTC programs at Williams-Brice Stadium to honor the memory of those lost in the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Together, we climbed the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs—2,200 steps—symbolizing the heroic journey of first responders who ascended the towers to save lives. Following the stair climb, we heard from Army ROTC Instructor and retired Lt. Col. Mr. McKinney, who shared his personal experiences. He reminded us how quickly life can change, how plans can unravel in an instant, and how vital it is for leaders to be ready to adapt and act decisively.

Today, we remember the fallen: the brave souls who gave their lives to save others, the innocent men, women, and families who suffered at the hands of evil, and those who answered the call to confront and defeat that evil. Their sacrifice must not be in vain.

It is now our responsibility to honor their legacy—by learning from the past, preparing for the future, and doing everything we can to prevent such tragedy from ever happening again.

Have a meaningful 9/11.

During the Gamecock Battalion’s second and third labs, Cadets rotated between stations to learn basic warrior tasks and drills, all of which will come in handy at Cadet Summer Training. During Lab 2, these tasks were calling for fire, requesting a 9-line MEDEVAC, emplacing a claymore, and throwing hand grenades. For Lab 3, the Battalion shifted focus toward Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), where Cadets learned basic interventions and evacuation techniques relating to treatment of casualties taken during combat. This includes evaluating a casualty's condition, applying a tourniquet, and deploying a litter or a SKEDCO. While this served as foundational knowledge for some and reinforced prior training for others, the entirety of the Gamecock Battalion is now more prepared to handle all of these tasks in the future!

This week, we welcomed new cadets to our program, and what better way to introduce them to the Army than with a lab at the Victory Tower? Cadets were instructed on the usage of their safety gear, built confidence on the slanted wall, and then transitioned to rappelling on the vertical wall. This taught cadets to trust their instructors, peers, equipment, training, and most importantly, themselves. It also presented them with something unique to the Army experience. We’re proud to say no cadets failed to rappel down the tower, and all of them did so safely. This was an awesome way to launch off this school year, and we’re excited to see what’s next!

From April 11-13, Cadets from the Gamecock Battalion successfully executed the Spring Joint Field Training Exercise (JFTX), joined by fellow Cadets from Coastal Carolina University, Wofford College, SC State, Presbyterian College, and UNC Charlotte. This event marked the culmination of months of rigorous preparation through leadership labs, classroom instruction, and physical training. Over the course of the exercise, Cadets conducted a variety of tactical operations—including Raids, Ambushes, Attacks, Movements to Contact, and Defensive operations—while effectively employing key assets and showcasing tactical proficiency. MS3 Cadets were evaluated on their leadership performance using SOAR cards, gaining valuable experience in critical leadership roles under stress. Their performance reflected not only individual growth but also the strength and cohesion of the Gamecock Battalion and its partner programs. The success of this JFTX stands as a testament to the hard work, discipline, and dedication of every Cadet involved. , ,

During our MTC/Ambush Lab, Gamecock Battalion MS3s conducted two separate missions. First, CDTs conducted a simulated Movement to Contact, patrolling through the Area of Operation until engaged. After the MTC was concluded, CDTs conducted an Ambush, demonstrating their leadership by emplacing key elements to surprise the enemy. Simultaneously, MS1 and MS2 Cadets completed important documents in order to understand their path to graduation and commissioning. , ,

The Gamecock Battalion has been putting in some serious work to ensure our CDTs not only meet but exceed the standard at Cadet Summer Training (CST). Over the past several weeks, the battalion has been hard at work executing a series of tactical labs designed to sharpen both individual and team-level leadership skills. These labs—Attack, Ambush, Movement to Contact, Raid, and Defense—provide our CDTs with hands-on experience in real-world mission scenarios and allow them to practice key skills under pressure. Each lab culminates in full-scale run-throughs, where the cadets get a chance to apply everything they've learned in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

These tactical labs are a critical component in preparing our battalion for the highly anticipated Spring 2025 Joint Forces Training Exercise (JFTX). At JFTX, our cadets will have the opportunity to take on leadership roles during different mission sets, collaborating across units while demonstrating their ability to execute tactical operations in a controlled but challenging environment. These exercises are the perfect proving ground to showcase the leadership potential of our cadets, as they’ll be expected to think on their feet, adapt to changing situations, and lead their peers with confidence and clarity.
