We can't wait for the conference! This Night Walk is just one of the reasons...
Join us for a light walk at night at the 2026 Kansas & Missouri Environmental Education Conference on Monday, October 26th!
Night walks are guided walking tours that demonstrate how humans have altered the nighttime environment by the introduction of artificial light at night. Artificial outdoor lighting ostensibly serves several purposes that include safety, visibility, and aesthetics.
This night walk will cover approximately a 1-mile (paved and trail) path in-and-around the Anita Gorman Center in Kansas City, Missouri. During the walk, we will critically observe a variety of outdoor luminaires and rate them in terms of their intended purpose. More importantly, we will critically assess these luminaires vis-à-vis their impact on human health, visual acuity and overall safety, as well as their impact on the flora and fauna neighboring wilderness areas and the flora and fauna that reside in them.
Our hope is that you can replicate similar walks in your communities to highlight the importance of responsible lighting and to dispel misconceptions about dark sky advocacy: we can have a safe, appropriately illuminated community AND minimize the impact of artificial light on the health and wellbeing of humans, birds, pollinators, and other animals and plants.
