The Country Music Guide to Economics: Songs in the country music genre often deal with topics related to everyday life, such as work, money, tradeoffs, and value. These topics are also a focus of economics, and, as such, this session provides educators with example songs and activities that can be interwoven into an Economics course to make the content more relatable to students.

(1) Pretzel Decision Making. Explore the PACED decision-making model through a fun pretzel challenge, then apply it to real-world personal and public choices. Learn how rational decision-making shapes everyday life, communities, and government. Attendees receive a classroom-tested lesson plan and the Atlanta Fed’s decision-making infographic.
(2) Monetary Policy: The Fed’s Playbook. Explore the Federal Reserve’s dual mandate of maximum employment and price stability, how its monetary-policy tools have evolved, and how the central bank works. (1) The Headline Isn't the Whole Story: Teaching Unemployment and Inflation. Two economic indicators. One big idea: the headline number is just the beginning. First, discover a card sort that builds the unemployment rate from the ground up, a data dive into what the official unemployment rate obscures. Next, dig into a car analogy that demystifies inflation, and a scenario-based activity that reveals who bears the real burden of inflation.
(2) Why Trade Is Sweet — And When It Isn't: Two Lessons on International Trade. Trade policy is dominating headlines — are your students ready to think about it like economists? Experience two lessons that build and then complicate the case for free trade: a candy simulation that reveals why voluntary exchange increases well-being, and a source analysis activity where students evaluate real-world critiques of unrestricted trade.

Congratulations!

Ms. Osborne-Melson is in her second year of our SC Financial Literacy Master Teacher program!

Lexington School District 4 teacher Rebecca Osborne-Melson has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Palmetto State Teachers Association Classroom Grant. This is the fifth year of the PSTA Classroom Grants created as part of the Reinvesting in Our Members Program.

Ms. Osborne-Melson is a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Sandhills Middle School. This grant will be used to purchase materials for financial literacy lessons in her World History classes. The addition of materials like a document camera and global currency collections will support lessons about the importance and differences in currency around the world. According to Ms. Osborne-Melson, “To give students a global perspective of economics, they need to understand how money works in reference to buying power, currency exchange, and the physical appearance of currency around the world.” PSTA Executive Director, Kathy Maness surprised Ms. Osborne-Melson at her school with the exciting news that her grant was chosen as a winner!
