Congratulations to Tomoyo Seo, a former ELC student who has just been selected as recipient of the University of Maryland Global Campus Alumni Association's 2026 Achiever Award!

Tomoyo writes, "When I received this news, the first place I thought of was HCC, because my journey truly began there.

I came to the English Language Center to learn English. One day, one of my teachers asked me, "Are you a native Japanese speaker? Can you teach Japanese to adults here?" At that time, I had no teaching experience at all. That one question changed my life. I became a Japanese instructor and taught classes such as Japanese 1A. Through teaching adult learners, I discovered my passion for education, and that experience inspired me to earn my MBA in 2024. Today, I continue to teach Japanese through my own business, FindaJapan, and to mentor students as they build their own career paths.

I would not have received such an honored award if I had not attended HCC. The encouragement, trust, and opportunities made all the difference."

Where will YOUR English take you?

Our students’ goals go beyond the classroom and so does our work!

Last week, ELC staff joined colleagues from around the country at NAFTAE’s Flood the Hill in Washington DC to highlight the importance of adult education and the opportunities it creates for learners, families, and communities.

Hot off the press!

We’re excited to celebrate ELC staff Nikki Sappington, Tamara Jones, and Katie Edwards, who just published an article in TESOL Connections, a magazine for English teachers around the world!

Their article, “Feedback That Works: Error Correction in the Four Skills,” shares practical ideas to help teachers give useful feedback—and help students become stronger English learners.
