Plant of the Week: Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) 🌳

Known for its iconic, fragrant white flowers, the Southern Magnolia blooms from May through mid-June, producing stunning blossoms that can reach up to 12 inches across. After flowering, the tree develops large, cone-like fruits that reveal bright red seeds in late summer and fall. This semi-evergreen tree can grow 60–80 feet tall with a spread of 30–50 feet, making it a striking landscape addition. Common varieties include ‘Edith Bogue’ and ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty.’

Congratulations to Jenna Sommer, Assistant Director of Horticulture, for successfully completing the Certified Grounds Manager (CGM) Program, one of the green industry’s premier professional development programs. She is the 197th grounds management professional nationwide to earn this certification.

This achievement also marks a historic milestone for Mizzou, which is now the only university in the country to currently have three Certified Grounds Managers on staff.
