Today marks the 112th anniversary of our military occupational specialty 56M - Religious Affairs Specialist (formerly Chaplain Assistant). The signing of General Order No. 253, issued by the War Department on Dec. 28, 1909, officially established the Chaplain Assistant as a member of the Army Chaplain Corps.
Thanks to all of our Religious Affairs Specialists for all they do each and every day!

“I was influenced to join the U.S. Army by my grandmother. It’s what she always wanted me to do. When she passed away, I felt as if joining the Army was my way of honoring her. I imagined the Army to be much worse than what it is … I actually like it. Meeting new people and building bonds that are unbreakable are the most rewarding things about being a Soldier. I meet people who become Family to me and that is the most rewarding to me.
My MOS is 56M-Religious Affairs Specialist. I chose this MOS because I wanted to be closer to the Lord. I also wanted to learn how to talk to people easier and not be so shy.”

“I’ve only been in the U.S. Army since March 2021 and joined after I worked in pastoral type ministry within a church. I felt led to join the Army to pursue ministry in a completely different environment. I imagined the Army would be what it is — an elite force ready to protect the Families and lands of the United States. Being able to serve and protect others and being part of a mission much larger than myself is the most rewarding part of being a Soldier to me. The Army can be hard at times but even in the toughest storms, God can make the rain feel refreshing.
My MOS is 56M-Religious Affairs Specialist. I chose this MOS to be a light in the darkness and hoping to encourage and show God’s love along the way.”

“I joined the U.S. Army in August because I wanted to do something different with my life. I didn’t have any big expectations before joining the Army except for doing a lot of physical training. I learned that I’m stronger physically and mentally than I ever thought I could be now that I am a Soldier. For someone thinking about joining the Army, I say, do it. It may not be pleasant for a bit but it will be worth it.

Beautiful words for a very special man of God. Congratulations Chaplain (COL) Edison on your retirement! God’s blessings to you and your Family. 🙏🇺🇸
What Can You Say About a Chaplain, Mentor, and Leader like CH (COL) Edison!! I haven’t been able to celebrate his retirement fully because it felt like I was losing my spiritual covering 😢.
But I believe I can manage because he’s taught me Well 😇💪🏾✝️ 🇺🇸.
I met him in 2015 at my first National Baptist Convention denominational training. I was a First Lieutenant, Chaplain Candidate. He immediately took me under his wing and fathered me in the Chaplaincy. From then till now I have Never met a COL Chaplain with such integrity, empathy, efficacy, spirituality, and veracity as CH Edison. He was a mentor and father to me and a big brother to so many others. He was our Leader & our Man of God. He could brighten ANY room and shifted atmospheres for the glory of God. I’m truly gonna miss him serving in the fight with us, But I’m sooooooo happy for My “Auntie”, My illustrious and beautiful Health Coach Mrs. Cecelia Boykin Edison and their children because it’s all about them now and for that I am so grateful!!! I have both of their numbers so I’m GOOD!! Can call them Whenever I need them.
Happy Retirement 🥂🎉 🎣🏖️ to the BEST to ever do it!! He gave the Army 30 years!!! May God add 30 more years of life, love, blessings, and good health back to him and his family!! Well done Thy good and faithful servant!!
