We had a great time with our Summer Camps this year hosted by Agathos Classical School! It was great to see all the new faces and especially to see some of the same students we had last year come to take more classes! Students participated in classes on Forestry and Lumber, Blacksmithing, & Furniture Making. A big "Thank You" to all those who participated and a very special thank you to our Blacksmith Instructor Christopher Schwartz, Williamson & Sons in Columbia for providing the coal, and Jennifer Burns for all of the administrative support she does for us!

Every Summer, CICA organizes summer camps for students interested in being introduced to some of the trades in which our ancestors took part long before our time. It's an enriching experience for them, something I'm sure they'll not only remember, but take pride in as they grow and mature! Thank you to Agathos Classical School for hosting this educational event for us!

We're enjoying our time with younger students this week at our CICA Summer Camps! Students are learning forestry and lumber techniques from over 200 years ago, along with blacksmithing as well! A special "Thank You" also to Agathos Classical School for hosting these Camps!

Head on up to Spring Hill, TN to get some AMAZING strawberries and check out the offerings from our close friends at Wandering Poet Farm! They offer a variety of home grown lavender for everything from culinary needs to health products and a few things in between.

Generally speaking, beauty correlates directly to the amount of time spent creating. Creations that involve planning, effort, and patience will almost always result in beauty, especially when paired with experience... Which only comes with more time!

One of the most consistent struggles we have with prospective students is the amount of time that goes into a project. Many of us remain unwilling to invest that time for an array of reasons. But for those who take on the challenge along with its inherent frustrations, the result is always very rewarding and emboldens us to invest again.

This is a traditional mortise and tenon fencing project at our very own Chapel Hollow Farm, on which some of our students have contributed. It has added both beauty and charm to the place we call home, and we're thankful for the investment it took to put it in place.

This is a hand-cut dovetailed keepsake box project I worked on with my son not long ago complete with his own personal touch of a copper inlay detail that he designed himself. This type of wood joinery goes back hundreds of years and this piece will still be on great shape to pass down to future generations. CICA offers classes in hand tool woodworking and many other hand-worked skills. Check out our website for our upcoming classes!

The Historic trades... Where should I start? The trades have always fascinated me, from watching at a young age the blacksmith work at Colonial Williamsburg, to traveling the U.S. documenting the revival of the skills of yesteryear, I am and always have been hooked! It's my intent on this page to highlight skills of my own interest, local tradesman and historians that seek to educate the public on these skills, and also highlight some of the work that I find myself stewarding. If you're interested in learning more about what we offer, let us know!
