The other day a woman told me she found Comics today "Hard to look at". I replied yes, they're usually overly cluttered, forms aren't separated enough and tend to just overlap, and the digital coloring obscures the linework and puts "modeling" everywhere where it's not needed. Sure, this is the Modern "style" of Comics and as such is instantly recognizable to the Gnerd fanbase, but functionally speaking it doesn't work at all. Why did Comics start getting called "Graphic Novels"? There are quite a few reasons I touch on in this new book! Mainly, it was an emphasis on the Words over the Pictures, which had to do with Publishers fueling an ascendance of "writers" over "artists" in the Industry. That sabotages the Medium itself, coz you can always remove the words and still have Comics, but you can't remove the pictures because they are PRIMARY. Without Pictures, you really DO have a Novel! Anyway, all this is why the new book's called "Creating" Comics, not "writing and drawing" them.
