High Mileage

My 1998 Ford F-150 has 272,000 miles on it. Other than an AC compression leak it runs like a champion. The outside bears all the wounds of many hunts through the woods and two teenage daughters learning to drive. The interior is in tatters, the glove box will not close, and last week the airbag system went kaput. But she is a sweet drive and my trust in her is deep.

I was mentioning to a much younger friend today how I have been unable to kick this nasty cold I have had for two weeks. His comical reply? “Tom, it sounds as though you have followed the owner’s manual properly, but it is a high mileage unit after all.” I roared. Like my truck, I am beat up, tattered, have some wiring shorts, and some compression leaks. But I treat my body like a temple and do all I can to keep it running smoothly.

I tell you all of that to say this. It is Christmas and this Christmas is different. I have the deepest sense of love, peace, and gratitude that I have had in an exceedingly long time. There is so much of my world that has flipped upside down lately, and really all of 2025. I do not care. I am delighted to be here – with my wife I love dearly, my plain-vanilla family, and my church family. I am so grateful for friends, my neighbors and coworkers, and my clients. I am grateful for my home. I am grateful for a respectable job. I am grateful for my God in Heaven who I know loves and adores me. My heart is full and overflowing.

What are you grateful for this Christmas season? If you are feeling a little lonely, a little put out, a little sick and tired of it all, can I offer you some hope? There is a God in heaven that is bigger than anything you could have ever imagined, and He wants your heart. He wants your love. He wants to do life with you. He wants to show you things you may have only dreamt about. Invite Him in. Give Him a spot at your table. He is so much more.

May this season bring you joy, peace, and the beauty of gratitude. And even if you do feel like that old beat-up vehicle, know your life has purpose and meaning. Keep on truckin'.
