Hey!
Spring announcement:
Hello, all! I hope the Spring Semester has started well for you.
And I hope you’ll carve out the time, at 2:30 this Friday afternoon (and for four more Fridays, this Spring) to attend our Civil War lesson series aimed at enriching your studies. As always, the classes are FREE, and so is your SC Confederate Relic Room visit, to attend them. We very much hope you’ll consider attending most, or all, of the Spring series, and we’ll have a recognition certificate for those who do.
I’m looking forward very much to these classes, since I get to highlight important themes and introduce you to important characters and stories. We’re also looking forward to introducing you to our new Junior Docents program, another enrichment opportunity for your students.

A Civil Spring: Five Lessons on Civil War History
January 30 Leadership Lessons from Fredericksburg
The bloody battle of Fredericksburg in December of 1862 was a major Southern victory, but the last battle for General Maxcy Gregg of Columbia. We’ll examine tactical and moral leadership decisions by three local men at that battle, from brigade command down to a field musician.
February 13 Dixie Diaries: Mary and Malvina
Primary sources will be the focus for this class, as we examine entries from the wartime diaries of two South Carolina ladies. One became the most famous diary of the war; the other writer helped start the Relic Room in her later years. There’s a lot to learn from each!
February 27 Artillery Stories of the Carolinas Campaign
This time we’ll look at the men behind the big guns – specifically, the cannoneers defending Columbia, and the ones shelling Columbia, in 1865.
March 27 Horse Soldiers Through and Through:
Hampton, Wheeler and Kilpatrick
Who led the Beefsteak Raid? Which Confederate later wore blue, and gave orders to Theodore Roosevelt? And where was the Battle of Kilpatrick’s Trousers? Each has a Columbia, South Carolina connection. This month, we’ll get to know the cavalry leaders whose soldiers fought to obstruct – or assist – Sherman’s march through Georgia and the Carolinas.
April 24 Going Home: After Appomattox and Bennet Place
We’ll end our Spring series, with the end of the war. After years of danger and misery, the war ended – but not all at once, and surviving soldiers faced new challenges and hardships as rebuilding began. This class will examine the final acts of the war. We’ll ponder what we might learn from our history about successful peacemaking after conflict.
Confederate Relic Room For over a century, the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum's mission has been to collect and preserve the military history of this state. When you enter Columbia's oldest museum, you uncover the state's martial tradition from the Revolutionary War to the present War on Terror.
