This week, more than 20 rising fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students are learning about the medical field through the Kid Doc Summer Camp, offered through Richland One’s Summer SOAR.

The program, which is taking place at Watkins-Nance Elementary School, is designed to inspire elementary students from minority communities to explore careers in healthcare through interactive labs, simulations and mentorship from medical professionals. The Kid Doc Summer Camp is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is the camp’s first year in Columbia.

Every school year tells a story, and the 2025-2026 school year was defined by moments that inspired us, challenged us, and brought us closer together. More than a reflection on the past year, this is a celebration of the students, educators, staff, families and community members who make Richland One a special place. The best part of our story is that we’re still writing it.

Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Wear Orange is about more than raising awareness. It is also an opportunity to think about the many actionable steps we can all take to protect our families and communities.

Whether or not you own a gun, it’s critical to understand the importance of secure gun storage. This weekend and throughout the year, start the conversation. By working together and spreading the word about secure firearm storage, we can create a culture of safety that benefits our children and communities and saves lives.
