Exciting News for Fantastic Educators ~

Watching students grow into the best versions of themselves is one of the greatest parts of what we do. Last week Susanna and Ms Kristie attended a local event “People not Patients”, the culmination of three years of research being presented by Able South Carolina and the South Carolina Historical Society.

Through their findings we learned more about the historical truths of the treatment of those with disabilities and the ways as community members we can support these individuals better, with services that preserve dignity, respect and independence.

Beyond that, watching Susanna grow from student to such a wise, insightful and beautiful professional “plus one” is an absolute honor.

Some of our families may remember Dylan who was with us for a year. He is doing fabulous and back on the soccer field! Way to go, Dylan! We miss you but are ridiculously happy for you. ⚽️🥅

To summarize an email sent to parents of our Sunnyside students today, this morning was one of those moments that just makes you stop for a second and realize the important work being done.

Novel studies are a big part of what we do at Sunnyside Academy. We read. Every day. Together. The kids finished their tenth novel of the year today and… just started talking. About character relatability, writing styles, author's voice, comparing characters, preferred genres, and literary styles. All of this, organically, in a multi-age small group setting. No big setup, just a really thoughtful, honest conversation.

We mostly sat back and listened. It’s pretty incredible to watch what happens when kids are given the time and space to really read full books without pressure, to discuss and enjoy them, and to develop a love of literature. They showed up in such a real, confident way today. We are so proud.

The weather over the past couple of weeks has certainly kept us on our toes… 🌧️🌪️
But at Sunnyside Academy, even during a tornado watch, what matters most is that our students are safe, supported, and still learning.

This moment, gathered together in the hallway, turned into a lesson on the components of a paragraph. Because learning doesn’t stop when plans change… it simply adapts.

We are always prepared.
We are always prioritizing safety.
And we are always finding ways to keep learning meaningful.
