We are a great big new family here this year and that always brings adjustments! There are bumps in the road and we still have a long way to go, but that’s what it’s all about and exactly how it is supposed to be.

👥 Why Multi-Age Learning Matters

In most traditional schools, students are grouped strictly by age and expected to move through every subject at the same pace. At Sunnyside Academy, we know that’s rarely how real learning works.

A child may be advanced in reading, right on track in writing, and need extra support in math, ... and that’s okay.

Our multi-age classrooms allow us to adjust, adapt, and meet students where they are across all subjects.

That means:

✨ Accelerating in areas of strength
✨ Slowing down when remediation is needed
✨ Providing individualized instruction based on readiness, not just grade level
✨ Allowing students to grow at their own pace without unnecessary comparison

In our classrooms, it’s common to see:

📖 A younger student contributing powerful insight during a novel study
➗ An older student reviewing foundational math skills while another moves ahead
🤝 Students helping each other, learning patience, leadership, and collaboration across ages

Real life doesn’t separate us by grade level, and learning doesn’t always fit neatly into those boxes either.

At Sunnyside, students are seen as individuals first. Multi-age learning gives us the flexibility to support the whole child, honor their unique learning profile, and build confidence along the way.

Because growth is not one-size-fits-all. 🌱

Learning looks different for every child, and sometimes different is exactly what they need.

👥 Why do small groups matter?

Some children don’t need more pressure to succeed.
They need more space. More time. More connection.

In traditional classrooms, it can be easy for students to feel overwhelmed, overlooked, or lost in the pace of a larger group. For many children, small groups can make all the difference.

At Sunnyside Academy, our intentionally small student-to-teacher ratios allow for:

✨ More individualized support
✨ More opportunities to ask questions
✨ More meaningful relationships with teachers
✨ More flexibility in pacing and instruction
✨ Less overstimulation and comparison
✨ Greater confidence and participation

Small groups don’t mean less challenge.
They mean more access.

More access to support.
More access to understanding.
More access to being truly known.

And when children feel safe, seen, and supported, they are far more likely to engage, take risks, and grow.

Sometimes the biggest change in learning doesn’t come from changing the child.
It comes from changing the environment.

🌞 Learning looks different here. We like it that way.

🇺🇸📚 Freedom, Stories, and Why They Matter

As we come off the Fourth of July weekend, a time spent celebrating freedom, independence, and the voices that shaped our country, it feels like the perfect time to talk about one of the most powerful tools in education: literature.

At Sunnyside Academy, reading is never just about “getting through a book.”

Through group novel studies, students learn to ask questions, think critically, discuss hard topics, and see the world through perspectives different from their own.

Books create opportunities for students to explore:

✨ Courage
✨ Justice
✨ Freedom
✨ Human rights
✨ History
✨ Empathy

This year alone, our students worked through more than a dozen novels together, sitting around tables, asking big questions, disagreeing respectfully, thinking critically, and learning how to think deeply.

In a world where information moves fast, we believe slowing down with a book, a discussion, and a thoughtful group of peers matters more than ever.

Because sometimes the most important education lessons aren’t found in worksheets or homework, rather, they’re found in stories and discussions.

📖 At Sunnyside, literature isn’t extra. It’s part of the foundation.

What if school looked a little different? 🌿📚☀️

What if every day included time outside, not as a reward, but as part of learning itself?

What if students sat together across age groups, reading the same novel, discussing big ideas, and learning from each other’s perspectives?

What if instruction wasn’t one-size-fits-all, but built around each child’s pace, strengths, and needs?

That’s the heart of a microschool.

At Sunnyside Academy, students spend time outdoors every single day, engage in group novel studies, learn in multi-age classrooms, and receive individualized academic support designed specifically for them.

Microschools are intentionally small, allowing for:

🌞 Daily outdoor exploration and movement
📖 Shared novel studies and meaningful discussion
👥 Multi-age learning communities
✏️ Individualized instruction and flexible pacing
💛 Strong relationships between students, teachers, and families
🧠 Support for students who may learn differently or need something beyond the traditional model

For many families, a microschool provides the opportunity to step away from the pressures of traditional education and into a space where children can feel known, supported, challenged, and safe.

Because learning looks different for every child and sometimes different is exactly what they need.

🌞 What is a Microschool?

A microschool is a small, relationship-based educational model designed to offer a more personalized and flexible approach to learning than traditional schools.

At Sunnyside Academy, our microschool model means:

👥 Small student-to-teacher ratios
Students are known, supported, and taught as individuals rather than part of a large system.

📚 Individualized learning
Lessons, pacing, curriculum, and support are adjusted based on student needs, strengths, and goals.

🤝 Relationship-centered teaching
Strong relationships between students, teachers, and families are at the heart of everything we do.

🧠 Support for neurodiverse learners
Microschools often provide a better fit for students who learn differently and may struggle in traditional environments.

🌿 Flexibility and creativity
Learning can happen through novels, projects, outdoor experiences, hands-on activities, movement, and meaningful discussion.

💛 A focus on the whole child
We prioritize academic growth, but also social-emotional development, confidence-building, and helping students feel safe and understood.

Microschools are not “one-size-fits-all,” and that’s exactly the point.

For many families, they provide the alternative they have been searching for when traditional school settings have not felt like the right fit.

✨ Learning looks different here. We like it that way.
