LET'S LEARN: Aphasia!!
What is Aphasia?
- Aphasia is a condition that affects one's ability to communicate. Including the ability to express oneself and/or understand language.
What causes Aphasia?
- Aphasia can be caused by a stroke, tumor, or traumatic brain injury to language regions in the left hemisphere. These areas also known as Broca's area (responsible for producing speech) and Wernicke's area (responsible for helping us understand language).

Last semester our lab launched our fMRI experimental paradigm!🧠
In collaboration with the McCausland Center of Brain Imaging, we have already conducted several fMRI sessions with Aphasia and Control participants. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in our study, please email us: [email protected]

🌟 LAB MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 🌟
Jessica Benson is a undergraduate student here at the University of South Carolina. She is a public health major with a double minor in business administration and neuroscience. Her goal is to attend graduate school in order to become a speech pathologist. She is interested in working in the lab with electrocephalography (EEG) to investigate neural mechanisms of speech production and motor control. Learning about functional neuroimaging is also interesting to her because fMRI allows you to look at the brain structures that are activated during speech production.
Jessica's interests include working with kids who have neurological disorders and is looking forward to being hands-on in the lab and working with clients!!

🌟LAB MEMBER SPOTLIGHT🌟
Josie Reed is a first-year graduate student in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Carolina. She graduated from North Greenville University with a B.S. in Health Science with a minor in Psychology. Her interest include working with adults with dysphasia and neurological disorders and plans to work in an inpatient rehabilitation setting. Josie has joined the Speech Neuroscience lab to increase knowledge of using the fMRI scanner to understand the structures and neural activity of the brain during speech production.
Josie is looking forward to interacting with other lab members in the lab and working with participants!

Many of the people who participate in our research studies have post-stroke aphasia. Aphasia is a language impairment that can affect a person's ability to produce speech, comprehend speech, read, or write. Aphasia presents with a wide range of types and severities. Each person with aphasia will be different and have unique communication needs.
This graphic provides some simple tips for communication. Comment down below other ways you can improve your communication with someone who has aphasia!
