Our propulsion research group, led by Abigail Penfield and Chris Hammon, has had a BUSY semester. We’ve tried new fuel grain geometries and motor configurations, new ingredients, and new tools. We’ve also refined our fuel grain manufacturing and static test fire procedures and ensured our processes are repeatable, efficient, reliable and safe.

We accomplished our primary goal of designing a motor that produces higher initial and average thrust than the one we used at the 2023 Spaceport America Cup (SAC) but know we can do even better.

In the pursuit of a spectacular motor for a future SAC, we’ve created 7 recipes and have made more than 72 lbs of fuel.🤯 We tested an M2198 motor, an M2131 motor and a L832 motor, and we have one 98mm and five 75mm motors ready to be tested next semester.

In the spring, we plan to decide on the best recipe and start the process of characterizing the propellant and scaling up to an appropriate motor configuration.

The Mizzou Space Program received funding for our 2023 Argonia Cup project from NASA’s Missouri Space Grant Consortium.
At MOSGC’s annual spring meeting last weekend, we listened to undergraduate and graduate students present their research. We presented about our Argonia Cup project during the poster session on Saturday.
We also got to check out MS&T’s rocket team and talk to them about their projects.
A description of the NASA Missouri Space Grant Consortium can be found here https://web.mst.edu/~spaceg/

Congratulations to the four of our members that were able to build, launch and recover their very own Tripoli Rocketry Association level one certification rockets over the break!

Way to go guys!

During MSPring break, our members worked on our Spaceport America Cup competition rocket and made the fuel grains that we will use for our rocket’s motor.
