I’m always looking for ways to make yummier, healthier food in a way that saves money. This homemade mayonnaise is something I have been making for about a year now and we love it. It sources our healthy eggs and I know exactly what is in it. Also, I had to showcase my new wooden measuring spoon because, well, it’s so pretty.

I find winter the hardest time to keep my chicken coop clean. Snow and ice pile up making it impossible to use a wheelbarrow and if it’s too cold I don’t like to make the girls stand out in the cold while I clean. Today I couldn’t stand the mess any longer and lured them out of the coop with a pumpkin I’d saved from last year. As they gobbled up the nutritious orange flesh, I blocked them from reentering and dove into the nasty job. I had to use a sled to haul away the poopy straw and deposit it on the compost heap. After it was clean. I spread a thin layer of pine shavings (for better absorption) and heaped clean, sweet straw on top. By this time, the girls (and one guy) were done feasting and were clearly eager to see their clean home. What a good feeling it is to have a tidy coop! And… just in time, too. I found out tonight that I’ll be welcoming a few more young layers in a few days. 😊

We are settling into a great year of classes and reading therapy here at The Reading Cottage and I just had to share a story about one of our incredible students. Sara* is a middle school girl who struggles with learning differences, significant sensory overdrive and anxiety. When she started in September 2018, I had to adjust our methodology to accommodate her sensory needs. She was reading at a pre-primer level. Now, one year later, this brave girl reads at an end-of-THIRD grade level and is tackling chapter books with delight. She is slowly relaxing into the reading life and is excited about her career plans. I'm so proud of her!

While our specialty at The Reading Cottage is therapeutic phonological mastery, our end game is this...helping children revel in words, stories, and ideas.
