With heavy hearts and an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to cancel our last Farmers Market of the year, originally scheduled for this Saturday. The odds of rain/thunderstorms on Saturday have risen over the last few days, and now stand at near 100% - and then there is Tropical Storm Isaias in the Gulf which, while not currently expected to hit our area, is still far enough out to change its track.

We'd like to thank our vendors and everyone who supported our Farmers Market this year, and UGA Extension Miller County, Colquitt Downtown Development Authority & the Chamber for making it possible. So, as the official rules for the Spring Creek Smoke-Off mention, there are cash prizes for the winners in each judged category - but if you've been wondering, here's what they are.

Now, you'll notice it says "minimum" right there by each prize... What that means is, each prize is based on a percentage of the entry fees, so the more teams that enter, the higher the prize amounts will be!

Now, remember that this isn't a "professional" or GBA contest - this contest is for the hobbyists, enthusiasts, and folks who just plain like to grill. Prizes are great and all, but more than that we just want folks to come out, make some good (or even just good to you!) food, and enjoy time on the Square with neighbors and friends, both old and new. Don't forget, you don't even have to compete in all 3 meats - you can just enter whichever one you do best: Boston butt, chicken, or ribs. (Although you do have to do all three to qualify for the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion categories!)

🌱 Pasture mealybug has arrived in Georgia, with the first confirmed detection reported in the southwest corner of the state.

UGA Extension forage specialists have been working around the clock to track the newly arrived pest and establish the best management options for Georgia producers.

Here's what you can do:

▪️ Clean farm and hay equipment between fields or farms.
▪️ Avoid unnecessary driving through pastures.
▪️ Change footwear and clothing after visiting a suspected infestation.
▪️ Keep grazing records and avoid moving livestock into or through affected pastures.
▪️ Limit traffic onto farms when possible.
