The Solertia Humanities Speaker Series

Hosted by the UCCS Humanities Program, the Solertia Humanities Speaker Series brings an internationally recognized leader in the humanities to campus each year for a conversation centered on the ideas, experiences and values that shape human life.

The series takes its name from solertia—a quality of prudence that calls for clear judgment, courage and thoughtful action when facing the unexpected.

Through this annual series, UCCS Humanities invites the campus and broader community to explore questions of wisdom, justice, courage, diversity and our shared human experience.

The Baltimore Waltz by Paula Vogel comes to the Osborne Theatre September 18–27.

Directed by Jamie DeGeorge Garvoux, this darkly comedic play follows siblings Anna and Carl on a satirical journey across Europe as Anna faces a fictional terminal diagnosis. Beneath the humor, the story becomes a moving exploration of grief, relationships and the AIDS crisis.

For more than two decades, Ben Brantley served as chief theatre critic for The New York Times, becoming one of the most influential contemporary voices writing about Broadway and American theatre.

Join us for a special "Prologue: Forums on American Theatre" conversation exploring the work and legacy of Stephen Sondheim, including Theatreworks’ "Sweeney Todd" and the upcoming student production of "Company".

We’re proud to highlight our very own Ben Kinsley, Associate Professor and Director of Visual Art at UCCS, as part of this conversation on the future of art and creative practice across the Rocky Mountain West.

Join historian and bestselling author Kristin Du Mez for a special book launch event at UCCS as she discusses her new book, Live Laugh Love: The Secret History of White Christian Women and the World They Made.

Du Mez, author of Jesus and John Wayne, explores the ways religion, consumer culture, gender and ideas of empowerment have shaped the lives of white Christian women in America.

The event will take place Tuesday, September 15 at the Ent Center for the Arts, Shockley-Zalabak Theater. A book signing begins at 4:45 p.m., followed by the book launch event at 6:00 p.m.

The event is free to attend, but a ticket is required. The first 75 attendees in line will receive a free copy of the book, with additional copies available for purchase.
