Parents deserve honesty about how schools serve children with disabilities. They also deserve facts.
Despite alarming claims circulating online, special education laws in the United States remain fully in place. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act still guarantees students with disabilities the right to a free appropriate public education. Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act continue to protect against discrimination.
This does not mean the system is perfect. Schools face staffing shortages. Funding has never met federal promises. Some students receive uneven services depending on where they live. These are serious problems—but they are not new, and they do not mean rights have disappeared.
Describing every budget debate or administrative change as a “dismantling” of special education creates unnecessary fear. It distracts from real solutions: better training for teachers, stronger oversight, and fair funding.
Protecting children with disabilities requires accuracy, not alarm. Progress depends on informed citizens demanding improvement—not being told the system has already collapsed.
