Orion is coming back.

I've started spotting Orion in the early morning sky, and every year that first glimpse makes me a little happy. It means Orion season is on its way.

You don't always need a telescope or a special astronomical event to explore the sky. Sometimes it's as simple as stepping outside, looking up, and noticing that an old familiar constellation has returned.

Over the next few months, Orion will become easier to see, and there's a LOT hiding in and around this constellation that we'll explore together.

Ever wonder why the Moon sometimes turns red?

Eli is breaking down what happens during a lunar eclipse- when Earth moves between the Sun and Moon and Earth’s shadow falls across the lunar surface.

And this Thursday, we get to watch it happen!

Colorado Springs, get ready for a lunar eclipse!

This Thursday, August 27, join the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society at Cheyenne Mountain State Park – Limekiln Trailhead as we watch the Moon move deep into Earth’s shadow. At maximum eclipse, nearly 94% of the Moon will be covered.... just shy of totality!

📍 Limekiln Trailhead, Cheyenne Mountain State Park
🌙 Maximum eclipse around 10:12 PM

Bring a chair, dress for the evening temperatures, and come experience the eclipse with us.

Weather permitting, of course, because astronomy always comes with that particular fine print.

The clouds behaved… until they didn’t.

We joined today at Bear Creek Nature Center for some solar observing!

We started with sunshine and some great views of our closest star and even managed to capture an image of the Sun before the clouds rolled in. Eventually the rain joined the party too, so our observing session ended a little earlier than planned.

That’s astronomy. Sometimes the sky cooperates, sometimes it changes the plan. But every clear moment is another chance to discover something new.

Colorado Springs! We’re having a SUN day!

Join the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society this Saturday at Bear Creek Nature Center for some safe solar observing! Come take a closer look at our star and see what the Sun is up to, from sunspots to prominences and whatever else it decides to show us that day.

Every astronomer knows this story…

You plan the star party.
You pack the telescopes.
You check the forecast approximately 47 times.
And then… clouds.

Sometimes the universe has other plans.

A cancelled star party doesn’t mean the sky stopped being interesting, though. There’s always something to learn, something to explore.... and another clear night coming.
Until then, we wait. And refresh the forecast. Again.

We’re beta testing a new way to turn astronomy outreach into an adventure kids can continue long after their first look through a telescope.

Young explorers can use their Lyra Journal to learn about what they’re seeing, record their discoveries, and complete astronomy activities and observing challenges. Along the way, they can earn achievement stickers for milestones like exploring the Moon, spotting constellations, observing planets, discovering galaxies and nebulae, safely exploring the Sun, and more. 🌙☀️🪐✨

The idea is simple: don’t just show kids the universe—give them a reason to keep exploring it.

This is still a beta concept, and I’ll be learning from real outreach events as the journal and achievement program continue to grow.

One observation. One discovery. One sticker at a time.
