Why physics needs art to help picture the universe – Frank Wilczek | Aeon Opinions
Historians of science usually date the origin of the Scientific Revolution as 1543, when Copernicus’ De Revolutionibus first put the Earth in motion. While that is a convenient and defensible choice, it is not the only good candidate. An earlier s...

On the STEAM Train of Thought… - Carolyn DeCristofano
Ever since the project that led to the development of my first book, Leonardo’s ABC, I have been impressed by the ways in which new, important avenues of thought made possible by rigorous exploration of the arts with science, technology, engineering, and math. Integrate arts activities into the various steps of the Engineering Design Process or directly in a design challenge:
* Use the arts as a learning tool
* Use a musical work as a source to integrate or connect STEM subjects(explore technology, history, acoustics, patterns, rhythm and movement)
* Find the science in the art or science in art
* Use the arts as a way to increase empathy and emotional content - Neuroplasticity
* Link the history and criticism of the arts to other areas of curriculum, such as history, literature and the students’ role in the community.
* The arts offer exposure to ideas and emotions that cannot be expressed in words alone and the possibility for understanding the depth of the imagination.
* Create a story - through video or theatre about solving a real world problem: How do I purify water? How can I use green energy?
* Adding the arts to STEM content enables students to realize more easily that there is more than one solution to a problem.
* Students will use the arts in the creation of technologies through engineering.
* Students will use the arts in the marketing of technologies to include various forms of communication and presentations so that products are adopted by consumers.
* Students will explore and apply science and/or math content while using the arts as a learning strategy. Experience STEM!
* Arts experiences will be used to engage more students in STEM and the engineering design process.
* The arts serve as an on-ramp to STEM learning to increase participation of underrepresented populations in STEM.
