D49 Weather Alert | UPDATE D49 CLOSED Thursday, December 4

Overnight reports from the National Weather Service warn of “Dense Freezing Fog” that is limiting visibility and causing icing conditions that will persist well into the morning. Local reports verify that sub-freezing temperatures, dense fog and very slick surfaces are creating widespread, unsafe travel conditions, which has been confirmed by our crews as they traveled area roads and witnessed multiple slide-offs.

As we’ve tracked the conditions through the night, and early this morning, it has become clear that conditions will not sufficiently improve to allow safe operations Thursday, even with a two-hour delay. Therefore, D49 will close Thursday, December 4. The closure includes BASE 49.

We understand the significant disruption a closure presents, which is why we work to let you know as early as possible. As always, our first priority is the safety of students and staff all over the district. We make our weather call decision by thoroughly evaluating forecasts and overall conditions that put district students or staff at risk.

We thank you for your trust and understanding. Stay warm and safe!

D49 Weather Alert | Two-Hour Delay Thursday, December 4

The extended wintry shift in weather this week quickly dropped several inches of snow across our region through the day Wednesday. Although the snow has stopped, we are seeing widespread icy and snowpacked conditions in our neighborhoods and primary roadways. While D49 crews will work tonight to prepare our campuses for safe operations, we cannot determine if conditions are safe until we see progress by county and city plow crews overnight. Operating on a two-hour delay Thursday will give us a chance to evaluate conditions and give drivers, riders and walkers more time to arrive safely to their destinations.

Accordingly, we are announcing School District 49 will delay school by two hours Thursday, December 4. The delay includes BASE 49 and there is no a.m. preschool.

As always, our first priority is the safety of students and staff all over the district. Because many students and staff travel across zones, we make our weather call decision by evaluating overall conditions that might put any district students or staff at risk. We thank you for your trust and understanding

D49 will close Wednesday, December 3.

We are closely monitoring a cold and unsettled weather pattern moving into our area. The latest localized forecasts are firming up, calling for an extended blast of snow that will start Tuesday night, and extend well into the day Wednesday. We will wake up to measurable accumulation, and snowfall will intensify as the day goes on, backfilling cleared sites and sticking to existing slick surfaces. We predict a double impact, with blowing snow during both morning and afternoon carpool times. These factors, along with projected sub-freezing temperatures through Wednesday will create unsafe conditions that will not significantly improve, even with a two-hour delay. Accordingly, D49 will close Wednesday, December 3, 2025.

This status means BASE 49 will not operate, which is why we are notifying families early to allow time to make necessary adjustments to their schedule.

As always, our first priority is the safety of students and staff across the district. We make our weather call decisions by thoroughly evaluating forecasts and projected conditions, while working to accommodate families with early notice whenever possible.

Thank you for your trust and understanding. Stay warm and safe. More info at D49.org
