Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning celebrates the work of its students and staff on Geek Thin

Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning is free public charter school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, with a specialty in serving students who need to work at least one grade level above in any academic subject. Geek Think Films began in the 2015-16 school year when a class of Division V (7th/8th grade) students were working on high school writing standards and they decided t

Brett Forrest of KOAA News Channel 5 made an appearance at this year's premiere of "Out of the Ordinary" and helped the GeekThink Films students feel like celebrities. We were so thrilled to have him in attendance for such a special night, and for helping us get the local community talking about all of the amazing students at AcademyACL.

The Colorado Springs Gazette covered the premiere once again, but this time with a special twist. Congratulations to AcademyACL's Kiera Mooney. She was invited to be a Gazette student reporter for our special evening.

Thank you Gazette and Kiera for helping all the students involved with GeekThink Films have a fantastic premiere!

AcademyACL's Advance Early Primary class wrote their own screenplay this year. These ambitious kindergarten and first grade students then asked GeekThink Films to turn their story into a short film. We were thrilled to premiere "Orange You Glad We Didn't Give Up?" as an opener for "Out of the Ordinary" on April 22, 2026 at ENT Center for the Arts. These brave kids even starred in the movie they wrote. GeekThink Films is definitely glad these young writers didn't give up!

'Out of the Ordinary' is officially public on the GeekThink Films' YouTube channel. Please make sure to subscribe to the channel... AND SHARE THAT LINK. We want to work our way past 200 subscribers this year.

'Orange You Glad We Didn't Give Up' by the Advanced Early Primary class will also be posted as soon as I have worked out some minor issues with the file. Look for that over the few days.

That's a wrap.

Premiere Night was amazing and I am incredibly thankful for the hundreds of people who showed up to support the school, the film program, and this year's movie. It was an amazing night and you helped make our students feel like the superstars they are.

The list of people and organizations I have to thank is extensive. For everyone who helped make this year happen... THANK YOU! That extends to ENT Center for the Arts, Premium Rides, Jahlysa Azaret and the Colorado Springs Gazette, Bradley Davis of KRDO, and Brett Forrest of KOAA.

I will work to get the film uploaded to our YouTube Channel this weekend. Over the next couple of weeks, I will attempt to get photos, videos, and media accessible where appropriate.

It has been a great year and I am already looking forward to the next one!

Last Friday, the Colorado Springs Gazette visited the school to talk to the kids about premiere night, an event the Gazette will attend to cover.

This morning, a bunch of the students arrived at school by 4:30am so they could go on air with KRDO as part of What's Up in the 719.

Our students are absolutely rocking the press coverage and deserve every bit of the attention they have worked so hard to get.

We have entered Premiere Month for GeekThink Films with the big moment only 21 days away. To celebrate the upcoming premiere of Out of the Ordinary at ENT Center for the Arts on April 22nd, Raising Canes on Hilton Parkway is helping us with a fundraiser. Tomorrow, from 3:00pm to 9:00pm, let Raising Canes provide your dinner. Mention GeekThink Films and they will donate 15% of Net Sales to the program.

Help support our amazing kids with a great meal!

Today, one of this year's cast members and a school icon showed up to prep for filming. It has been awhile since Robbie walked the halls of our school, so today he visited our DII classes and said hello to some friends in the hallway.

I have a feeling it won't be long before Robbie makes another appearance at the school! What rooms will he visit next?

Yesterday, a group of thirty amazing young people met at the school to officially begin filming Out of the Ordinary. They were extremely focused and dedicated to their work. There were two scenes scheduled to be filmed today. Both were completed AND they managed to get some B-Roll that can be used as well.

I am incredibly proud of everyone who showed up on a Sunday to bring this film to life. I am also incredibly thankful for all the adults who showed up to help and to provide snacks.

2 scenes closer to April!

PRODUCTION SEASON APPROACHES!!

This past Thursday, the writers of 'Out of the Ordinary' read their screenplay to an audience for the first time. It was a pleasure to welcome the Director of AcademyACL (Teresa Brown) and our Dean of Students (Jenny Tarbox) to our read through and witness the amazing progress this group of students has made.

Monday will be our first info meeting for families of the kids involved, and Thursday will be the first read through with the film's cast. From there, we will enter Winter Break and return to production season in full swing. Filming begins in three weeks!

Auditions for 'Out of the Ordinary' are underway today. A total of 35 kids, from PreK to 8th Grade, are auditioning to be in this year's cast, making decisions very difficult. Overall, from Main Cast to Extras, Crew, and Adult roles, we've had almost 60 people sign up to help with the film.

GeekThink Films and everyone involved is incredibly thankful and humbled by the overwhelming amount of interest and support we are receiving. We asked 'What If?" and you answered loud and clear...

On behalf of the Director, Producers, Writers, and Myself. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Because of you, we can.

- Mr. Henry

The Advanced Language Arts class has been in round table talks for just over a week, diligently working out the story for this year's movie. They have been discussing ideas, characters, conflicts, visual effects, scenes and more. Deliberating, debating, learning to compromise, all while learning the art of story and the power of words.

In just over a week, these eighteen brilliant and creative students have been able to plan and outline twenty scenes. For the first time, this year's screenplay saw some life, and the winning story for the 2nd Annual WhatIf? Awards became much more than just a response to a prompt.
