AcademyACL Short Film Premiere and Red Carpet Event at Kimball’s Peak Three

Colorado Springs, CO, May 23, 2022, 5:40pm: Picture kids disembarking from luxury vehicles onto a red carpet, to enjoy the glitz of paparazzi and the celebration of their film-making skills at a local, downtown theater. Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning, a Kindergarten through 8th grade charter public school in Colorado Springs District 11, will host a short film premier of “We Were Distant” on Monday, May 23,2022 at Kimball’s Peak Three Theater, 115 E. Pikes Peak Avenue. Red carpet event starts at 5:40 pm with the first film showing at 6:00pm and the second showing at 6:20pm. All media and the public are invited to attend.

The short film, We Were Distant, is 17 minutes long and this is the seventh annual student-led production from the school’s film program, GeekThink Films. This production seeks to capture the stories of the people and events from the COVID-19 pandemic. Through interviews and creative filming, seventh and eighth grade students at AcademyACL endeavor to carry forward memories, hopes, and dreams from this unprecedented time in our history.

Students will arrive at the premiere in luxury vehicles sponsored by The Red Noland Auto Group of Colorado Springs, to walk the red carpet and take media questions to discuss their film-making process including writing, directing, acting, editing, and producing.

Lydia Carter, an AcademyACL student and We Were Distant crew member, says that the film seeks to highlight the memory of those who were lost during the pandemic and to illustrate that each person is more than just a number or a statistic.

Eight years ago, students created their first film, Silent Echo, a story of a deaf girl who heard only the negative voice in her own head. The annual process of directing, cinematography, acting and editing is a completely led by 7th and 8th grade students with the assistance of Language Arts teacher, Anthony Szpak (pronounced Sp-ock). In response to why students decided on this topic, Szpak said, “For the past two years our world has been torn apart by the pandemic. The loss we have experienced has forever impacted our lives, especially for the children. This film is their attempt to bring back our sense of community and to honor the lives, passions, and talents taken from us all.”

There is no charge for admission and donations will be accepted, including online donations at https://academyacl.networkforgood.com/projects/161226-geek-think-films-presents. Seats are limited for this event. For more information, please contact the office at 719-434-6566.

TALKING TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT DEVASTATING NATURAL DISASTERS
By Dr. Matt Zakreski
(This was written in response to Hurricanes; the practical information is spot on especially for our gifted children.)

"....please don’t assume that your child knows nothing about these events. Even if your child doesn’t watch or listen to the news, chances are good that he or she knows and hears about major events (and even some minor ones) via commercials, social media, and word of mouth. Kids often know more than we give them credit for, and providing them information in a safe, controlled environment allows them to process the information and understand it in an appropriate context."
