Want to learn how a house is actually built?

Join us for a 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀-𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 designed for ages 16 and up.

Students will work as a team to 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹, lay out studs, frame a doorway, and learn to use a pneumatic nail gun and common framing tools safely.

Then we’ll work with a scale model of a home to understand how walls, floors, roofs, openings, and other structural components fit together to form a complete structure.

This isn’t a class where you sit and watch. 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

1 Day Class

In 2014, I had the opportunity to visit master blacksmith Peter Ross at his shop and purchased a set of traditional chest handles from him. Peter was the Master Smith at Colonial Williamsburg for many years, but I first saw him on The Woodwright Shop on PBS. Visiting him at his shop (on Whitesmith Rd .. not something he planned, apparently!) was amazing -- I'd just started Kilroy's! He had post vises behind every door, and his floor was end grain blocks of dogwood. Very cool flooring .. I was in an airplane hangar with a porta-potty, so quite the geek-out moment for me.

But getting back to the handles... Peter also published a how-to for the handle-making process with plans published through Popular Woodworking, and now we’re turning the handle design into a hands-on class.

You’ll forge a matched pair of chest handles using traditional blacksmithing techniques, including layout, chiseling, punching, filing, tapering, bending, fitting, and final assembly.

The challenge isn’t just making one good handle.

It’s making the second one match.

You’ll leave with two finished, functional forged handles based on Peter Ross’s traditional design and a much deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind historic hardware.

A forged-from-scratch chef’s knife can take three days. This advanced one-day class starts with a heat-treated AEB-L stainless blank so you can focus on the precision work: grind it thin, build the handle, finish it, and sharpen it.

Kevin Cashen, ABS Master Smith and president of the American Bladesmith Society, will be teaching a class on Journeyman Fit & Finish! In the weeklong class Kevin will work with students on the exacting standards required to pass the presentation portion of the ABS Journeyman test.

ONLY FIVE KNIVES AVAILABLE. Build and finish a stainless D-Guard Bowie based on Harvey Dean’s own design. The hard metalwork is prepared; you spend the class fitting, shaping, and finishing the handle, and walk out with the completed Bowie.

Note that Harvey is not teaching the class personally. We had a great time with him in the shop a few years back making a D-Guard design.
