Study the evolutionary development of cognition at the UCCS Center for Cognitive Archaeology (CCA)!

Cognitive archaeology is a truly interdisciplinary field that applies the theories and methods of several academic domains (cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, archaeology, linguistics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of consciousness, etc.) to the tangible evidence for human evolution—non-human primate anatomy and behavior, human neuroanatomy, hominin paleontology, and archaeology. It studies t

he origins and adaptive purposes of such cognitive processes and capabilities as concept formation, spatial cognition, social cognition, language, symbolic structures, and working memory. The Center for Cognitive Archaeology is uniquely positioned to provide cutting-edge research and the opportunity for students to enroll in unique courses online and on the UCCS campus that are unavailable at any other institution in the world—Courses such as paleoneurology, rock art, embodied cognition, neuroanthropology, and others.

ANTH 4200/5200: Advanced Topics in Archaeology: Ideational Cognitive Archeology

Ideational cognitive archaeology is a field that is concerned with inferring the mind frames of people in the past based on material remains. What kinds of beliefs did ancient people have? What were these people’s values and norms? What meanings did objects hold for these people? Join us this spring in exploring how archaeologists answer such questions; and ponder the interesting beliefs and perceptions that pervaded the minds of ancient people.

Neuroarchaeology: Now Offered Spring 2025!

ANTH 4200-781 takes an interdisciplinary approach to evolutionary research by combining archaeology and neuroscience into the field of neuroarchaeology. This class will explore what both disciplines’ strengths, weakness, and overlaps are in order to foster a holistic perspective on the evolution of cognition.

Cognitive Evolution: Now Offered Fall 2024!

ANTH 4310/5310 examines the evolution of human cognition using evidence from cognitive science and archaeology. Traditionally, these two fields of study have shared little in the way of theory or methods, yet both provide crucial pieces to the puzzle of human cognitive evolution. We (you and I) will attempt some coordination. To do this, you must be willing to acquire some unfamiliar facts, jargon, and perspectives fairly rapidly and with an open mind. This course counts as a core course for the CCA Undergraduate and Graduate Certificates.

The Evolution of Ritual and Religion: Now Offered Fall 2024!

ANTH 4155/5155 aims to understand the evolution of two uniquely human qualities: ritual and religion. This course takes a highly inter-disciplinary approach using archeology, anthropology, primatology, and cognitive science to define what ritual and religion are and to explore the role they have played in making us human. This course counts as an elective for the CCA Undergraduate and Graduate Certificates.
