If we’ve run the numbers correctly, Mammoth skiers are, as of July 23, now looking at a 113-day wait.

If you've driven I-70 over the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels or past Loveland Pass, you've probably benefited from it without even realizing it. This is CDOT's GAZEX avalanche control system, designed to trigger controlled avalanches and help keep one of Colorado's busiest mountain corridors open during the winter.
Installed in 2015, the remote system uses a mixture of propane and oxygen that is ignited inside steel exploder tubes. The resulting concussive blast safely releases unstable snow before it can become a dangerous natural avalanche.
After more than a decade of exposure to Colorado's harsh alpine conditions, the steel tubes have become less reliable. In 2026, CDOT and the Colorado Transportation Commission approved $2 million to replace the aging equipment with newer, more dependable remote avalanche control systems. The upgrades are intended to improve reliability and reduce the lengthy traffic backups that can occur during busy ski weekends.
Want to minimize travel delays to the ski areas? Here are a couple of tips:
Leave early, especially during winter storms. When Loveland Pass is closed, hazmat vehicles cannot use the tunnels with regular traffic. To move those vehicles through, traffic is typically stopped at the tunnels around the top of each hour. If possible, plan to arrive about 10–15 minutes before the hour. I followed this strategy last ski season and never had to sit through a red-light delay.

For all us skiers, here is your mid summer tip.
Now is the time to check all you skiing related apparel. Does my of it need to be replaced? Does it need to be washed. Or more importantly, does it need to be treated so it protects you from water? This is a good time as there are still ongoing sales of last seasons gear if you need to replace something.
It is important that you use the right stuff to wash your gear? You can find what I use on my web site below. They also have a water proofing formula that you put in the washer.
