This past weekend, the CSDB Special Olympics Track & Field Team competed in the Special Olympics Colorado Southeast Spring Games at Fountain Ft. Carson High School. Students completed with hundreds of Colorado athletes from across the region in events like softball throw, standing long jump, and in 25m, 100m and 200m races. The CSDB team took home multiple ribbons, including Gage who placed first in the standing long jump, an event he has been practicing hard for all season. Keep rising, Gage! Great meet!

The CSDB high school track team traveled to California School for the Deaf, Riverside for the 16th Berg/Seeger Track & Field Classic on Sat., April 11. Students competed in a variety of races, relays, and field events like discus, shot put, long jump, and high jump.

The competition is open to all Deaf and Hard of Hearing high school athletes in the United States. With at least 23 schools from across the country represented, it was an opportunity not only to compete, but to meet students from all over the United States.

This week, in Special Olympics Basketball, the CSDB All Stars took on the Cheyenne Mountain Hawks in a friendly competition. Students who are Blind and students who are Deaf play together on the CSDB team, which focuses on teamwork, sportsmanship, skill building, and fun! Players from both teams cheered each other on and the crowd went wild with support. Josiah, an elementary student in the School for the Blind, ruled the court with multiple baskets and Jesus, a senior in the School for the Deaf, had a picture-perfect layup. Cadie, a student who is Blind, runs on the court with a Bridges to Life student who is Deaf as her sighted guide. For her, this partnership with a Deaf classmate is her favorite part of the game. To make a shot on the basket, a teammate stands by and claps to give her a sense of its direction.

Zion Walker and Tre'Shaun Faison, Paralympians on the USA Goalball team, are teaching pro techniques to CSDB students. For the next two weeks, they're holding a goalball clinic after school for aspiring and current players in middle and high school. In their first session, they focused on techniques for guarding and blocking.

“It’s always incredible to work with Paralympians who’ve been doing this for a long time,” said Zane. “They know what we don’t yet and are willing to come out and teach it to us.”

Last May, U.S. Association of Blind Athletes - USABA officially relocated USA Goalball to the Colorado Springs Olympic & Paralympic Training Center where they have a dedicated state-of-the-art Goalball gym.

For Raquel it’s an amazing opportunity to connect with and learn from other athletes. She believes it will help her and her team get to the next level.

“It’s an amazing opportunity that public school kids don’t get!” adds Zane.

On Friday, two members of the USA Men's Goalball Team visited CSDB to demonstrate the sport to students in the School for the Blind. Athletes Tre’Shaun Faison and Jordan Main presented an overview of the sport and its history. Then, they demonstrated their high-sp*ed throws and blocks. Next, students of all ages tried out their own skills by throwing a goalball and blocking throws by their classmates and the pros. Tre’Shaun was a member of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Goalball Team and Jordan was an alternate.

For some students, this was their first experience with goalball. For others, it was a chance to meet and be inspired by Paralympian role models. For the next two weeks, members of USA Goalball will be offering a goalball clinic after school for middle and high school students who play or are interested in learning the sport, giving aspiring young players access to professional player instruction and advice.
