The tears at the preschool door are not the whole story. Those first weeks of preschool can be emotional, for children and parents. But tears do not always mean something is wrong. Sometimes they mean, “This is new. This is hard. I am learning I can do this.”
Our children need opportunities to experience disappointment, worry, sadness, frustration, joy, pride, and everything in between, while knowing they are safe, loved, and supported.
We do not build resilience by making every hard feeling disappear. We build it through connection, predictable boundaries, trusted relationships, and the experience of moving through something difficult and discovering, “I did it.”
And sometimes, while you are sitting in your car questioning every parenting decision you have ever made, your preschooler is already inside happily playing with play dough.
My newest Treehouse Minds blog explores what is really happening in the developing brain and nervous system during those emotional preschool goodbyes, and why a loving, confident goodbye can be such a powerful gift.
