Shelby Literacy Center is honored to announce that we received a $14,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support adult literacy programs in our community! 📚✨

This generous funding will help provide English language classes, HiSET/GED tutoring, career readiness support, and more for adults working toward brighter futures.

We are deeply grateful to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for investing in literacy and lifelong learning. Together, we are empowering individuals with the skills and confidence they need to succeed at work, at home, and in the community.

What a great day for a job fair! YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South organized a fantastic event.

Shelby Literacy was able to encourage some adults to take the step of earning their high school diploma. We want to be the biggest cheerleaders for our adults working on this important goal!

With donations from people like you and grants from The Allstate Foundation, Dollar General, and FedEx St. Jude, we were able to provide books, bags, and opportunities today.

We were also able to give away bags of books to families to build their home libraries. This smile says it all! 🩷

Today we’re celebrating one of our students, Babette. 🌟

Babette practiced as a dentist in her home country of Cameroon before moving to the United States. While improving her English skills, she is also working toward her goal of returning to the dental profession here in the U.S.

Recently, Babette had the opportunity to spend the day job-shadowing at Churchwell Pediatric Dentistry, and we are incredibly grateful to Dr. Caroline Churchwell, Dr. Molly Churchwell, and their welcoming staff for opening their doors and sharing their time and expertise.

After the experience, Babette shared how meaningful the opportunity was to her:

“I had a really great clinical immersion in a pediatric dental office here in the U.S., and it meant a lot to me. The entire team was very kind and welcoming, and Dr. Caroline and Molly Churchwell took the time to answer my questions, which I truly appreciated. This experience reminded me how much I love my profession and motivated me even more to keep working toward my exams and my goal of integrating into the U.S. dental system.”
