Happy birthday to the late great Henry James Townsend. Today he would have been 103 years old. Blue Shoe had the honor to bring him to Dallas twice to participate in several education programs, in 2004 and 2006.

In addition to receiving a posthumous Grammy Award for his appearance on Last of the Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen - Live in Dallas, Henry was the only recording artist to record every decade since 1920, making him one of the few, if not the only recording artists to have an eight decade long career.

Another aspect of Henry’s life and music that also goes largely unreported is that he was probably the first known rapper in America.

“I wrote songs on paper but didn't do me know good because it takes something out of my thinking. …I find myself doing a lot of ad lib poetry. The foundation that I needed I didn't have it.”

Henry's wisdom and contribution to the lives of many will live on and we are blessed to have known him and had the privilege to work with him.

We invite you to pickup a copy of the Delta Bluesmen album, or one of the many he produced, to show your support for his work and the mission to keep his music alive for future generations to appreciate.

There is an article about to come out in the paper about Blue Shoe. Digging through the archives, we found this video of a Master's class program we conducted with Richard Elliot in 2006. Richard has played with many groups including Tower of Power and is an incredible musician. Take a look at this video to see more of what happened that day http://youtu.be/y3MxMP5l6go

Had a great day visiting presenting to the students of Forest Trails Elementary in Austin on Friday.

Here is an amazing comment we received from one of the parents:

"My son loved your show! From the moment I picked him up from school all he could talk about was your amazing guitar playing and the other artists that you talked about. Being the child that lives in a family of musicians , it takes a lot to capture his interest in music. Mr. Blue shoes is hands down awesome!!!! Thank you for making my sons day and expanding his knowledge of music!"
