Meet co-founder and assistant consultant Dr. Ivanna Terrell. Dr. Terrell holds a Ph.D. in Information Sciences and Technology from The Pennsylvania State University, an M.S. in Information Technology from the University of North Texas and a B.A. in Psychology from The University of Texas in Austin. She has served as an academic tutor to high school students and a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant to upper-level university students. She has also served on numerous academic review boards and committees. In her recent academic career, Dr. Terrell applied for and received several full scholarships as well as acceptance into multiple, highly ranked colleges and universities. She is ready to bring her professional and personal experiences to other aspiring undergraduate and graduate students. Do early admissions really matter in the college application process? The short answer is yes – they do! There are several advantages to submitting college applications for early admission. It can reduce the stress of knowing whether you have been accepted into your chosen school(s), get a better handle on whether you should apply to other schools for admission, help you save the money you would have spent applying to other schools, and can significantly increase your odds of admission. So by all means, aim for early admissions when submitting your applications, but don’t rush the process either. Quality still matters. Most high school have counselors on hand, so it may stand to reason that there is no need to hire a private college consultant to help you and your child navigate your way through the college application process. However, according to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, high school counselors spend just 20% or less of their time on college applications and selection. The average public high school student receives just 38 minutes of personal counseling from their counselor over 4 years and the majority of that time was not related to college applications or advising. In fact, just 4 in 10 of these high school students reported receiving ANY college advising at all. High school college counselors are important, capable people who help students get through the often difficult last of their grade school years, but their main focus is not on college advising. Dr. Terrell is the former Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. Dr. Terrell holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in speech-language pathology and a B.A. in speech and hearing sciences, all from the University of Pittsburgh. As Graduate Dean, Dr. Terrell served as a member of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Board and spearheaded university policy for graduate admissions and fellowships. She served on the Board for admission decisions for a national scholars program. Over her 32 years as a university faculty member, she has successfully counseled students through highly competitive college admissions, helping them gain entrance to the college of their choice and win thousands of dollars of highly competitive scholarship awards.
