The best part of any tournament isn’t the medals you bring home. The best part is watching the team step up for each other. Thank you Alex and Billy (pictured) and the rest of the coaches and teammates for the support and care you bring to the JJ Machado DFW community.

Dr. Endel “The Real Professor” Iarve* is 64 and “Tiny” Mike McCall** is 54. They gave me a run for my money today. They had me working!

* Endel is nicknamed “The Real Professor” because he is a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at University of Texas at Arlington. He is literally a rocket scientist.

** Mike McCall recently earned the nickname “Tiny” because he went from 300 pounds to a svelte 295 pounds after breakfast today.

You are never too old to train Jiu Jitsu! 👊

8 years ago, I had the opportunity to sit next to Master Jean Jacques Machado at the World Masters. It was one of most impactful days of learning for me. I wrote the following about my experience:

I spent 6 hours alongside this man.
6 hours alongside a genius.
A master craftsman at work.
A Jiu Jitsu savant.
Insight into strategy.
Insight into movement.
Insight into mental states.
After watching 20 seconds of action,
He predicted match outcomes.
Stories from the old days of competition.
The focus needed to win.
The need for confidence.
The need for Jiu Jitsu in everyday life.

I got a master class in all things Jiu Jitsu, simply by sitting, observing and listening. Thank you Master Jean Jacques. 🙏

Over a year and half ago, Phil Blakeman came to our school during a tumultuous time in his life. He was transitioning between careers and he was a newly single dad to 3 young boys.

Phil worked hard, often training 4-5 times a week, working full time and being a dad. On top of that he was working on his continuing education in the hopes of starting a career as a teacher. It’s been a rough road for him but he never gave up.

Over the weekend, Phil’s hard work came to fruition as he was offered a position as a 5th grade special education teacher for the Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD. We were so happy for him.

So tonight, I felt that a new job and a new career deserved a new belt. Congratulations on your blue belt Phil. We are so incredibly proud of you.
