Do you know an ES student or current student at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University going into Sustainability? With support from a generous donor, we are funding up to 20 students to attend, interact, and network with sustainability professionals across the Midwest -- completely FREE.

🎙️Welcome to the Radio! 🎙️

Did you know that Dr. Joe Storlien, our very own soil scientist, has a monthly conversation on WJON? For July's episode, we explore how the recent drought has impacted people's gardens! Are you following the best watering tips? How do you know if you've irrigated enough? Do you have any soil questions on your mind?

Explore that and more in the recent show by clicking here: https://shorturl.at/ovXoG

🌳 Student Research Spotlight! 🌲

This summer, student researchers Ella Chiroux and Lucy Cunningham worked with Dr. Troy Knight to collect 1000+ year old wood samples in the Colorado River Basin. Working with researchers , the team collected cores from live trees and samples from dead wood in Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado. Back at the lab, they will be looking for trees with a climate record back to the year 200 BCE. From there, they can construct climate history DEEP into the past!

Do you know an undergrad student who is part of a cool research project or professional experience? Maybe they (or you!) learned a new skill that others could benefit from. Or perhaps a new way to connect with students, employers, and academics from across the Midwest.

Well, there's still time to apply to present your OWN research at the Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability this fall! Whether you focused on food recovery systems, fishery management, climate justice, or discovered a great new place to network, this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work and share what you've learned.

Applications are due September 1! Click here to learn more: https://shorturl.at/wHqx

"We're halfway there...ish!" — Bon Jovi 🎵

It's hard to believe, but we're already more than halfway through the summer! We've been hard at work: preparing for new students, exploring the Colorado Plateau, digging into soil science, and celebrating all the amazing internships our students have. Monty the Bear, pictured above, has been finetuning our social medias!

Still, we want to get alums involved! Do you have a favorite nature or internship photo from when you were a student? Send us a DM or post your favorite photo ("@" us!) to get featured.

For our Minnesotan and Midwestern followers, you have likely seen the Air Quality Index (AQI) alerts impacting our region. Currently, here at our home at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, our AQI is 420 — the most hazardous level on the entire index. Smoke from wildfires across the Boundary Waters region, Ontario, and beyond has spread across much of the continent, creating dangerous air conditions throughout the Midwest. While wildfires are influenced by many factors, a warming climate can contribute to hotter, drier conditions that increase wildfire risk and severity in many regions.

Everyone can experience health impacts from poor air quality, with increased risks for children, older adults, and individuals with heart or lung conditions. If you must be outside, consider wearing an N95 mask and avoid strenuous physical activity when possible. For the latest updates, follow the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS).

At the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, our “new years” run a little differently. For us, summer marks both the end of one chapter and the beginning of another!

Looking back from July 2025 to July 2026, we’ve had a lot happening on campus—more than 80 environmental events, to be exact. From papermaking to maple syrup harvesting, Earth Week keynotes to alum happy hours, it’s been an absolute blast.

Take a look at some of our favorite moments as we ring in our new year!

We had such a great time last week at our summer CSB+SJU Green Career Network event! We had over a dozen alums show up, ranging from the solar section to emissions analysis. We also got a sneak peak at the magic behind 56 brewing -- brewing beer is an art!
