Automaticity is not the ONLY thing that matters.

Teaching students flexibility with their facts and what patterns exist help them to do more mental math.

Using visuals to help them picture it? Even better!

What other patterns do you use?

Dominos are one of my favorite ways to practice math facts.

This simple game has students Subitizing (recognizing numbers without counting), counting on and then comparing numbers.

So easy to do and so many variations! Way more fun than flash cards!

Be sure to follow me for more ways to make math meaningful and fun!

This comment is 💯 valid.

Are we trusting our teachers to make decisions about student growth?

If not, how are we supporting teachers to effectively teach today’s students?

Who is headed to Fort Worth to CAMT?

This is my first time, but I've heard it's an AMAZING conference to nerd out on math and talk about how students learn!

I'm looking forward to talking about working memory and sequencing student work for effective discourse. I hope you will join me!

If you are going to be there, be sure to let me know! I would love to connect!

I've spent this week preparing for an awesome interactive session about how elementary students should be talking the BIG language of logic in math class. We are going to tackle 4 of my favorite strategies that go way beyond turn and talk!

If you are in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I would love to connect with you!

What's your favorite way to get students talking? How do you get to the real productive math talk?

I'm so thankful for my journey to Singapore, but I came home with an overwhelming feeling I wasn't expecting.

It's so much more than teaching a subject area. It's about a whole system that believes in math education with:

→ Teachers recruited from the top 30% of graduates
→ Elementary teachers specialize in just 2 subjects
→ Parents are deeply invested partners
→ Teachers are set up to succeed

The US is so big with each state and district with its own goals. While we can't fully replicate Singapore's process, we can apply its research-based principles into our teaching by starting with 1 school.

Just 1 school who believes children are capable.

Just 1 school who believes teachers are capable with the right support and training.

One school can impact a community, a district, a state and even a country.

I'm ready for the challenge! Are you?

I'm bringing these lessons into the 32 school networks I serve and sharing them here over the next few weeks. Follow so you don't miss them.

We definitely want to learn from Singapore’s math results to help our learners here in the US.

But it’s so much more than just using their teaching resources, which you really can’t do anyway.

After 15 years teaching Singapore Math and now visiting Singapore to learn about it in person, I’ve realized it’s so much more about the teaching strategies and the way students learn.

An awesome textbook definitely helps. (You know my favorites!) But if it’s not being done in a purposeful, intentional way, you really are just wasting valuable instructional moments.

I’d love to help you be successful by choosing quality curriculum, helpful teaching support and so much more.

What helps you learn the best teaching practices to use with your students?

For the past 13 years, I've learned all I can about the way Singapore teaches math here in the US. But there's been something missing.

I have wanted to see it in action. I want to know how students learn in their classrooms and how teachers are prepared in college.

Now, I'm finally getting an opportunity to do those things. Not just go to Singapore to visit the beautiful country, but to learn more about their education system.

I'm going to be documenting all of it and want to share it with you! What do you know what to know about math?

Leave me a comment so I can share my experience with you!
