Eleven student members of Inu-Yupiaq traveled to Indianapolis this weekend to perform at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention! This was PASIC’s 50th anniversary and Inu-Yupiaq’s 30th, which made the occasion even more special. (More videos and pictures to come)

Hello everyone! It's been a while since our page has been active, but we are still here! I am excited to announce that Inu-Yupiaq has been invited to perform at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis. The group will be holding a frybread taco fundraiser this Friday (October 24) from 11am-1pm in the Brooks Building Gathering Room. Hope to see you there.

Tonight!!!!

On November 14th at 7:30pm, SOUNDS OF THE CHANGING ARCTIC welcomes three Juneau-Based composers to Fairbanks: Todd Hunt, Beth Leibowtz, and Michael Bucy to lead performances of their recent works - Glacial Pathways (Hunt), Babel 2.0 (Bucy), and Lost Ice (Leibowitz). Each composition was made in collaboration with UAF scientists Olivia Lee, Joanna Young, and Vladimir Alexeev from the International Arctic Research Center, integrating current climate research with contemporary music practices. This performance will feature members of the Choir of the North, the UAF Percussion Group, student, faculty, and Fairbanks community musicians.

This event is made possible by generous support from the Helen Walker Foundation and the International Arctic Research Center.

During today’s practice, we danced “Ggenaa’ Kanani,” aka “My friend down there”. This yuarun was composed by Dwayne Myers of Pilot Station and is about Norman Carlo, our Dene friend who was a member of Inu-Yupiaq while he was going to UAF. Norman brings lots of enthusiasm and positivity to Inu-Yupiaq whenever he comes to practice and that is reflected in the song :)

School is out for the summer, so here is a throwback to one of the dances we practiced last semester. It is called the "Getting Ready" song, and it is being danced by Munch Kanuk.

Munch is from Kongiginak, Alaska, and he is a dedicated drummer and singer for the Iñu-Yupiaq Dance Group. He has carried many of our practices with his extensive knowledge of our songs and dances, and when he is home, he drums for his own community as well. Quyanaqpak for all you do, Munch!

Iñu-Yupiaq would like to give a (late) congratulations to our member Glenn on graduating! Originally from the Philippines, Glenn joined us this year and learned to both dance and drum many songs. He also made his first qaspeq at our qaspeq making workshop and it turned out great! We could not be more proud of Glenn and wish him luck in his future endeavors!!
Also, shoutout to another one of our members, Naatanii! He’s shown in the last video dancing with the Troth Yeddha dance group at graduation. Quyana for representing two dance groups so well Naatanii!
